Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
Caroline let out a long sigh. "So, there's really no other way?" Jasper scratched his head for a long time before speaking. "What if you try pulling out three hairs from Marmy?" "You mean, bury them in Farm One and make a wish?" Caroline's eyes lit up. That might actually work! Marmy had been left with the giant fish for now. No one knew what the monkey and the fish were talking about. Maybe, in Marmy's eyes, the giant fish was the one who needed healing the most. Caroline warned Jasper not to tease the giant fish anymore. The poor thing had suffered enough. It was huge and powerful, yet still treated like food, and they couldn't even eat it. Following Jasper's idea, Caroline pulled three hairs from Marmy and buried them in Farm One. She stood there for a long time, making her wish. When everything was done, she left the storage space. She checked her mobile base one more time, locked the door, and drove off. Night had already fallen. The streets were empty, just like when she came. No people. No cars. Still, Caroline stayed alert. She remembered the people who had been following her earlier, and she still didn't know what they wanted. She drove slowly and carefully. But just as she reached a fork in the road, a car suddenly shot out from the side—fast and silent, its headlights off. The other driver had planned this. They wanted a surprise attack. Caroline's car crashed straight into it. At that distance, at that speed, even braking was useless. Her heart tightened. Who would risk destroying something this precious in the apocalypse just to take her out? But they clearly didn't expect her to have a storage space that she could hide in. The moment the impact hit, Caroline slipped into her storage space and vanished. The storage space now let her see everything happening outside. She watched her car's hood get smashed and bent. The airbag burst open in front of her. If she didn't have the storage space, even with her ability and strong body, she would've been knocked out cold. The car that hit her stopped. After a moment, several people climbed out. When they started walking toward her, Caroline rushed back into the driver's seat. She buried her head in the airbag and pretended to be unconscious. Someone yanked the door open. Voices came from outside. "Is this Caroline?" "I think so. The trailing team said they lost her around here. This car matches their description." "She doesn't look like some superpowered legend. One hit from us and she's down? Hope she's not dead. Dead folks don't sell for much." "Whatever. Let's drag her out and tie her up." ... Caroline felt someone grabbing her and pulling her out of the car. She went limp and let them drag her. Halfway out the door, she struck. Ice ability—released in an instant. "Ah!" Three ice blades shot forward and pierced the throats of three men. Two others managed to run. Caroline pushed the dead body off her chest, opened her eyes, and looked up. A five-person team had attacked her. Three were already dead: two men and one woman. The two who managed to escape looked really strong. Caroline lifted her head and watched them from a distance. They stayed well back, not daring to make a sudden move. She didn't know that those two were staring at her with shock in their eyes. Caroline had taken down three people in an instant. And those three were strong; they were all attack-type ability users. To them, Caroline now seemed even stronger than the rumors. Caroline looked up and gave the two a small smile. She felt several quick jolts on her arm earlier. The weather was hot, and everyone was wearing light clothes. When the group grabbed her and dragged her off the truck, she had touched them long enough to copy three abilities. Two came from the ones who were now dead. One came from the woman who was still alive. Not a bad deal. While the two kept their distance and watched her carefully, Caroline looked down and checked the new abilities she had gained—mainly the woman's. She didn't expect the woman to be a strength ability user. And her punches could damage a person's organs. That meant Caroline had to be extra careful. She could not let that woman hit her. As for the man, Caroline glanced at him again. Something about him felt more dangerous. She had noticed the way he jumped back earlier. He moved much faster than the woman. And from the way she followed his lead, it was clear he was the one in charge.
