Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
The second floor was much smaller. It only had three bedrooms and a living room. Caroline felt that even the first floor was already too big for them. The second floor was just extra space they didn't need. When everyone arrived, she would let them pick whatever room they wanted. As for this suddenly upgraded mobile base, Caroline had come up with a story. She still didn't want to reveal everything her storage space could do. Yes, Tyler, Denton, and Nelson were all trustworthy teammates. She trusted them with her life. But she had just revealed the spring water, and that alone was crazy enough. Plus, she also pulled out that tiny pony for Denton from the storage space. If she told them the truth about the mobile base, it would push things far beyond what anyone could accept. Even if her teammates didn't mind, someone else might hear about it. What if someone like Shane, who could turn invisible, overheard a casual conversation? What if someone with another strange ability found a way to dig out the truth? If that happened, Caroline would become the target everyone wanted to hunt down. That was why she had admitted so quickly that she could copy abilities. Back then, she already planned to use that as a shield and hide the true power of her storage space. After all, she couldn't hide the fact that she had multiple abilities. She needed to use them all the time. And saying that copied abilities had limited uses made it easier to explain certain things inside the storage space. She had never told anyone how many times she could use an ability after copying it. All she'd said was that if she wanted to use it again, she had to touch the original ability's owner. Which meant Caroline decided the limits herself. So many things about the storage space could be covered with a simple excuse, such as this ability could only be used once, and the person who had it had died. And just like that, she could avoid a whole lot of trouble.Just like the elephant hide armor she'd given Nathaniel before, Caroline planned to explain the mobile base in the same simple way. She could blame everything on copying someone's ability. This excuse made things so much easier. After all, people could accept someone like Shane, who was almost impossible to kill. People could accept someone who ate waste and produced literal gold. They could accept Denton and his awful-smelling ability, so why couldn't they accept her story? Sure, someone would always be jealous that she could copy other people's powers. But even without the strange abilities she used to hide the truth about her storage space, the jealous ones would still be jealous. So for the mobile base, she came up with a simpler story. She'd tell everyone that the place used to be a normal house. Then she used someone's ability to remodel it. That way, people would believe it more easily. After finishing everything, Caroline prepared to return to her apartment. But then she realized something was wrong. The furry little Marmy she used to keep in her hands whenever she had nothing to do was gone. Her heart jumped. Then she felt a wave of disappointment. Had Marmy reached his refresh time? But she should have one more day with Marmy. She searched the entire house. She called for Marmy over and over. Nothing. Maybe Marmy had gone back to the livestock pen inside the storage space. Caroline decided to check and find out. But the moment she stepped into her storage space, she heard noise—lots of it. Jasper was yelling at the top of his lungs! And the sound was directed toward the Vibrant Fish Pond. Caroline followed the noise, and when she got there, she froze at the ridiculous scene. Jasper was in the pond. A cat in the water. Wasn't that impossible? And not only that, Jasper was biting the giant fish's lip! The giant fish thrashed wildly, trying to shake him off. But Jasper, with his tiny body, held on tight and refused to let go, like he had some deep personal grudge. "Caroline! This rotten fish swallowed Marmy!" Jasper shouted angrily. Caroline's eyes widened in shock. She rushed to the edge of the pond. Jasper and the giant fish were still fighting. Jasper scratched nonstop with his claws, but he couldn't leave a single mark on the giant fish. That thing was unbelievably strong. Caroline didn't know what ability the giant fish had, but she was certain it wasn't something simple. What made the scene even stranger was that both Jasper and the giant fish seemed unable to defeat each other. And even though Jasper looked like he was clinging on, it also felt like he was stuck and couldn't get out of the water. Her heart sank when she thought of Marmy. Even if Marmy only had one day left with her, Caroline didn't want to stand by and watch the little guy get eaten.
