Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
Caroline hesitated for a moment. Then she noticed something on the mobile base's screen; there was another page. She took a deep breath. Could this mean there were more details? Maybe even another solution? But when she flipped to the last page with shaking hands, four giant words jumped out at her. "You want me gone?!" Caroline was speechless. For a second, she really wanted to drag her storage space out and give it a good beating. A hundred different punishments flashed through her mind. Still, Caroline was stubborn. She decided to keep the mobile base. Not only that, but she upgraded the perimeter wall too. She raised the wall to about 10 feet tall and made it tougher. But doing that took work. She had to spend three hours hunting down a bunch of mutant cockroaches and mutant rats nearby to get enough energy to pay for the upgrade. As for the other functions—like attack mode, electric grids, and all those fancy defenses—she still didn't have the extra energy for them. The good news? Upgrading the wall didn't increase the mobile base's daily energy cost. Caroline had been sweating over that one. If the wall got bigger and stronger, would the base suddenly demand more energy too? Looks like the storage space still had some honor left. At least she didn't raise the price just because she made improvements. After all the upgrades, she checked the remaining energy inside her storage space. She only had enough to power the mobile base for two weeks. But that was okay. Earlier, when she went out to hunt those mutant animals, she realized something. Just like in her past life, mutated creatures were breeding like crazy after the great heat began. They weren't hard to kill at all. Even without help from the military, her team could go out once every two weeks and gather enough mutated creatures to keep the base running. And if her guess was right, in about 10 days there would be a huge wave of mutant flies and mosquitoes. She had already told the military to save some for her. With that, supplying energy wouldn't be a problem. Caroline took one last look at the mobile base in front of her. Now that the perimeter wall was taller, the base finally had a real gate. It was a big iron door, a little over six feet tall. It looked plain on the outside, but Caroline knew this door was tougher than any normal one. Even the lock was special. The system said it clearly: a lock no mortal could ever break open. That was basically a hard rule. Nobody was getting through that door. She stepped inside the mobile base and felt the difference right away. The temperature and humidity were perfect. The moment she walked in, her whole body relaxed. Even the small yard outside the base felt cool and breezy. While the outside world was hot enough to make people snap at each other, this tiny yard had a soft breeze drifting through it, like early spring sneaking into a heatwave. Honestly, the mobile base was a little pricey, but it was worth every bit of it. Caroline was very pleased. She grabbed something to eat, then checked her villa. After that, she took out the fancy mattress she had picked up earlier from Big Bro Supreme's office while collecting supplies. She even looked it up in some downloaded files and found out it was the most expensive mattress in the world—worth two million dollars! She had hit the jackpot. But sleeping on something that someone else had used? Especially knowing the person was a bald middle-aged man? That made her feel a bit gross. So she tossed the mattress into the JunkEater and made a wish. "I want a better mattress." The next day, she really did receive a better mattress. Back in her apartment, her bedroom had been too small to fit anything this big. But looking at the space in front of her—a bedroom that was over 500 square feet—she felt completely satisfied. Aside from the new mattress, the room looked exactly like her old bedroom from before the apocalypse. Warm. Simple. Familiar. When she moved her stuff before the apocalypse, she had stored all her things in her storage space. She placed them back the same way she remembered. The living room and bedroom had merged into one big room. She didn't mind that at all. She checked the other rooms on the first floor. With all the upgrades to her storage space and the special upgrade for the mobile base, there were five bedrooms on this level, plus a large living room in the center. Every room had its bathroom. And these bathrooms worked just like normal ones, with real flushing toilets. No more worrying about nature calls in the middle of the apocalypse. The mobile base even had some strange channel that connected to other storage spaces, but she wasn't going to think too hard about that. Her storage space already had plenty of things that made no sense. She was used to it. Even though the first floor of the base was nearly 3,000 square feet on the inside, from the outside it looked no bigger than 1,500 square feet. Small on the outside. Huge on the inside.
