Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 421 Awakenings

The group discussed the operation planned for tonight. Caroline and Tyler had previously interrogated William and his crew, learning that the organization was not far from here. There were 13 ability users in total; three had already died here, and including the naked man, Shane Roffe, that made four—leaving nine still alive. According to their intel, two of those nine were particularly dangerous. One was Shane—notorious, but they still did not know exactly what his ability was. Shane was currently imprisoned on the sixty-fifth floor, so this would be a good time for Caroline and the others to root out the organization. The other was said to be a person who could control all kinds of metal. His body was unbelievably tough; none of them had ever managed to leave a scar on him. Besides that, he could control any metal within about a 30-foot radius, no matter its size. Those metals became hidden weapons that struck when least expected. This man is also the leader of their organization. They heard that all kinds of metal weapons are placed everywhere throughout their compound, just in case someone tries to sneak in. "In our building, our boss is basically invincible," William had said, summing up their leader. The rest of the team's abilities weren't particularly impressive. Two of them had attack-oriented abilities: one moved at lightning speed, a blur when he ran; the other had ice powers and could form ice weapons to strike. That was why the group resorted to low tactics like spreading disease to deal with shelters—their overall strength was middling. Shane, the strongest among them, was a lunatic who could not communicate normally and disobeyed even their leader, often causing chaos. The remaining five possessed abilities unsuited for combat. "The only one we really need to watch out for is their leader. The rest are manageable," Caroline said. Denton, hugging a packet of snacks, nodded. "Yeah. His metal control is particularly dangerous, especially in a room that has already been prepared. On a previous mission, one teammate was killed by a single dart." Caroline nodded in agreement."I actually have a plan," Tyler said. Denton and Caroline turned to him. After Tyler explained his idea, both approved. "You call it devious, bro, but I call it strategy. Hehe! Deviousness is just another skill. No, this isn't deviousness; it's tactical trickery!" Denton, freshly roughed up, scrambled to flatter Tyler. Tyler shot Denton a cold look that said, If you can't speak properly, don't. Just as they finalized the plan and reviewed the sequence of actions, a voice crackled over the radio. Francis wanted to see Caroline. They had just finished talking, so Caroline headed down to the office on the fortieth floor. When the elevator stopped there, she heard a commotion: dozens of large sacks lined the corridor, all the way from the elevator inward. She peered in and realized every bag was filled with mutant carcasses. Caroline frowned. The sacks were crawling with flies and cockroaches and gave off a stench. Then, she remembered the temperature had climbed past 95 degrees today. "Caroline, have a look. Do you want these? If not, we'll haul them out and burn them," Francis said as he emerged, wiping sweat from his face. "It's too hot; flies and mosquitoes pose a disease risk." Caroline went over and siphoned the energy from the mutant carcasses into her space, but she did not take the bodies themselves. The flies and mosquitoes did not contain much energy; she did not need them for the mobile base, and she had enough stored energy for now. "Colonel Sutton, my ability lets me absorb energy from these mutant corpses, so I can use them. After I've drawn the energy out, the bodies can be incinerated," she explained. Since she had developed the ability to copy others' powers, and with so many ability users awakening, her excuse for hiding her spatial abilities had become easier to maintain. She could attribute strange occurrences to "my power," and most people would not question it. After all, the strangest rumor going around the shelter network was about someone whose power let them eat waste and turn it into gold—a filthy and useless skill, but a juicy piece of gossip.
