Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 420 Peaceful Sleep

Just for a moment, Caroline felt her heart melt. Without thinking, she reached out and gently patted the little creature on the head. Marmy responded by gently nudging his tiny head against her fingers. The velvety touch beneath her fingertips, paired with those big, earnest eyes that never looked away from her, made a sudden thought bloom in her mind—feed him, play with him, keep him! However, the thought was followed by a pang of regret. The little guy could only stay for a week, and since she had been so busy the past few days, two of those days had already slipped by. That meant only five days left together. Caroline sighed. What a shame to meet him this late. So, she took Marmy out of the space with her. To her surprise, he seemed universally adored. Even Raven couldn't resist, sniffing curiously and wagging his tail in excitement. Goldy on Caroline's wrist even slithered toward Marmy's arm, flicking its tongue as if trying to snuggle up to him. Caroline had a feeling—Marmy must have some kind of charm that made everyone love him. Riding on Raven's back, she stroked Marmy's fur while heading toward the apartment. Raven moved more smoothly than usual, careful not to jostle the tiny passenger. By the time she got back, night had fallen. The building was quiet except for a few soldiers still on patrol. When she reached the sixty-fifth floor, she noticed Nelson wasn't in the lab—probably already asleep. The naked man was still unconscious, most likely sedated, while William was gone. Judging by the circumstances, Nelson had probably finished his experiment and disposed of the body. Just as Caroline was about to head upstairs to her own floor, she heard footsteps behind her. She tensed instantly, but when she turned and saw who it was, she relaxed. It was Tyler. "Back already?" she asked, remembering that Tyler had also gone out searching for her that day. He nodded. "Denton said you hadn't returned yet, so I got a little worried." So he'd been waiting outside all night? Caroline thought, but only smiled faintly without commenting. Ever since they had seen the third "future vision" of the two of them from Crow, something subtle had shifted between them. It was as if they both understood, yet neither was willing to speak it aloud. "I'm heading to bed. You should rest too. We can talk tomorrow," she said. He gave a short nod, and they walked together toward the sixty-sixth floor before parting ways. That night, Caroline slept unusually well—peacefully, even. Her heart felt calmer than it had in years, like it had finally found a safe harbor after drifting through the chaos of the apocalypse. Maybe it was Marmy's soothing aura, or maybe it was the simple warmth of knowing someone was waiting for her at home. The next morning, Caroline woke up just after seven, not needing much sleep. Calculating the time, she realized she'd only slept three hours, yet she felt no trace of fatigue. Long soaks in the spirit water, combined with the awakening of her powers, had further strengthened her body, reducing her need for rest even more. Jet suddenly zipped into the room, chirping, "Hey, hey! Human! I found something adorable!" When he landed, a tiny fuzzy head peeked out from behind him. It was Marmy, and he was staring up at Caroline with those clear, shining eyes. "Good morning," she said softly, smiling. Somehow, the day already felt brighter. Strange, considering she had been facing a tough battle against a group of ability users later. After breakfast, she headed next door and knocked. The door flew open, revealing Denton with a piece of toast hanging from his mouth. "Caroline! You got back so late last night! Tyler was so worried! He kept pacing by the door, made it impossible for me to slee—ah!" Before he could finish, he was yanked backward with a yelp. Even as he screamed, he still shouted out between groans, "Seriously! Ow! He was worried about you! Even asked if we should—ow, ow—go look for you—Tyler, I'm done! Put the bat down already!" When the door opened again, Tyler stood there with a dark expression, a bat in hand, veins bulging on the back of his hand.
