Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
The man didn't even finish his sentence before he froze, eyes wide. Caroline had just triggered a random ability called "Ugliness is a Weapon." Every bodyguard in front of her was struck dumb when they saw her face—so hideous it defied imagination. Taking advantage of their stunned silence, Caroline unleashed her water ability. Two icy spikes shot forward, impaling the throats of the men pinning Nelson down. Ice burst through their necks, blood running along the frozen spikes before the two collapsed to the ground, dead before they could even struggle. Tyler darted forward, grabbing Nelson by the arm to help him up. But Nelson suddenly shoved him away, his face twisted with fury. He raised the arm that had been pinned behind him—still clutching a syringe with a long, steel needle. "I'll kill you all!" Nelson snarled, stabbing the syringe straight into the neck of one of the already-dead men. Blood splattered across his face, his pajamas, and the nearby wall. But Nelson didn't stop. He stabbed again and again, venting all his rage through each strike. The brutal sight made several bodyguards freeze in terror. Crow just stood there, completely stunned. Caroline looked at him coldly. "See that, Crow? Don't ever provoke us again. Even Nelson, the one you thought was weak, isn't someone you can mess with." Some bodyguards moved like they wanted to charge forward, but Crow raised a hand to stop them. After a while, Nelson's fury burned out. He stood there breathing hard, his white pajamas soaked in red. He stood up, the syringe still in his hand, and looked at Caroline and Tyler. Gone was the ruthless edge from when he'd just stabbed someone in the neck. Now, Nelson looked like a clean, fragile young man, his eyes clear and pure, without a trace of darkness. "Caroline," he said softly, "let's go home." Caroline walked up to him and gently wiped the blood off his face. "Come on. Let's go home." Even though Nelson was older, she had always treated him like a younger brother. And it was clear—he trusted her completely. ... When Caroline and her group finally swaggered out of Building B, Crow was still standing there, staring blankly at the bloody footprints they left behind. Some bodyguards and Obsidian Fang members came up to speak to him, but he didn't respond. It wasn't until a long while later that he finally looked up at his anxious subordinates. His voice was hoarse when he said, "Pull back every undercover agent we planted in Building A. From now on, we leave that place alone—whether it's the army or Caroline's team." He needed to change tactics and rethink everything about this apocalypse. No question—Caroline and her people had just taught him a hard lesson. When Caroline's team returned to Building A, the army side was in chaos. Nelson's kidnapping had caused such a commotion that, of course, the army knew about it. They'd gone looking for Caroline and Tyler, but were told the two had gone to Building B. When they tried to follow, Building B was already a war zone, and several people blocked their way. Francis knew Caroline and Tyler were inside, but he didn't dare act rashly. So he went back to Building A, dragged Alison out, and brought her up to the 40th floor. At that point, every spy who had been feeding information to Building B had been caught. Francis glared at them, gritting his teeth. "I've known about your little schemes for a while. I didn't act sooner because I wanted to see what Building B was up to—and to give you a chance. I've looked into all your backgrounds. You were decent people once, just got trapped by Building B. Especially you." He looked straight at Alison. "Tell me—why did Building B capture Nelson? What's their goal?" Alison was crouched in a corner, arms over her head, her hair hiding her face. She said nothing in response to Francis's question. The others beside her trembled in fear. Several other ability users were under control too, yet not a trace of fear showed on their faces. They were all recruits recently bought over by Building B and didn't actually know much. They had already spilled everything they knew—after all, loyalty wasn't exactly their thing. Now that they'd been caught, they might as well tell the army everything. But Alison was different. To her, Building B was like family. When she had wanted to end her own life, they'd taken her in. Lisa had given her training, guidance, and a reason to keep living before sending her back to Building A as a spy.
