Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 390 The Good Dog

During her time as a spy for Building B, staying in Building A and feeding them intel, Alison had started to feel alive again. She had a purpose, a mission—and strangely enough, it gave her more fulfillment than she'd ever had before the apocalypse. So, no matter how furious Francis got, she stayed silent. She was ready to die for her cause today if it came to that. Francis was fuming. Before the apocalypse, he had never hit a woman. But since the world ended, he'd lost control a few times—always with those who crossed the line. Now, looking at Alison sitting there without a trace of fear, he snapped. He kicked her hard, sending her crashing to the floor, then drew his gun and pressed it against her head. "Alison," he barked, "you were the one who let them into the 65th floor, weren't you? Because of you, Nelson got caught! Tell me what Building B's goal is, and maybe I'll let you redeem yourself. Otherwise, I'll put a bullet in your head right now." He cocked the gun as he spoke. He was beyond angry. If it weren't for the need to learn Building B's plan—and to confirm the situation with Caroline and Tyler—he would've shot her already. There were others he wanted to execute too. With all the chaos lately—new abilities appearing, insect swarms attacking—he'd let his guard down. He'd only assigned a couple of soldiers to watch these spies, and now this disaster had happened. Francis was furious with himself for being so careless, thinking he could keep these people around to feed Building B false intel again like before. Alison, still curled on the floor, suddenly started laughing. Her laughter grew louder, shaking through her whole body. Francis kicked her again, shouting at her to talk. Nearby, other soldiers were roughing up the remaining spies, demanding to know why Building B had taken Nelson and whether they'd set up Tyler and Caroline ahead of time. With those two still missing, Francis's worry grew heavier by the second. Suddenly, Alison sat upright. Startled, Francis immediately unleashed his wind ability.Sharp gusts slashed across Alison's body, cutting deep into her skin. He could kill her in an instant if he wanted to. But she didn't flinch. Instead, she grabbed the gun in his hand and held it steady against her own forehead. Her hair slid away from her face, revealing bright, feverish eyes. "Colonel Sutton, do you know what the people in Building B call me? They say I'm a good dog. A good dog never questions its master's orders—it just obeys." Bang! Before he could react, Alison forced his finger on the trigger and shot herself in the head. She fell backward into a pool of blood, a crooked smile still on her lips. Francis froze, then cursed under his breath, stomping his foot. "She's insane. A complete lunatic!" But there was nothing more he could do. He ordered the soldiers to carry her body away. Just then, Denton's voice called out from outside. "They're back!" After waiting so long for Tyler and Caroline to return—and learning Nelson had been taken—Denton had sent his army of mutant rats to scout Building B. He never expected that just moments later, he'd see Tyler, Caroline, and a blood-soaked Nelson walking out of the building. He immediately shouted the news to Francis, who had been pacing and fuming. By now, Caroline and her group had reached the bottom of Building A. Caroline frowned. In the short distance between Building B and Building A, she'd already spotted several mutant flies buzzing around. They circled above piles of rotting flesh, still small and not fully developed. But she knew they wouldn't stay that way for long—they'd grow, and when they did, they'd become terrifying. "We can't let these flies multiply," Caroline said. Next to her, Nelson blinked his wide eyes at the buzzing swarm, a crazed gleam flashing in them.On the upper floors, Francis finally exhaled in relief. But he didn't expect what happened next—as the soldiers carried Alison's body away, her eyes suddenly snapped open. A few days earlier, Alison had suffered from a high fever. She knew fevers sometimes triggered new abilities. But when she woke up afterward, nothing had seemed to change. She'd even asked others with ability about it, and they all described strange sensations—water forming in their hands, a burning heat in their chest, or random words slipping from their lips.
