Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
"Tyler, Caroline, you still haven't answered my question. What are you doing breaking into my bedroom in the middle of the night? If you leave now, I'll pretend none of this ever happened." Crow really lived up to his reputation as the leader of the Obsidian Fang—and as someone who'd basically lived two lifetimes. Even though Caroline and Tyler had him cornered, he stayed perfectly calm, acting as if he were simply entertaining two guests. Caroline and Tyler exchanged a look. They had already decided that once they caught him, Caroline would handle the questioning while Tyler guarded the door in case anyone showed up. But the moment Tyler pulled his blade back, Crow tensed. He reacted fast, trying to break free—he thought this was his chance. What he didn't expect was that something suddenly dropped over his head, and in an instant, his mind went fuzzy. He froze in place. Now, standing in front of Caroline, Crow had a bright yellow duck helmet on his head. There were holes for the eyes and a big plastic duck bill where the mouth was. It looked ridiculous. He stood there stiffly, eyes vacant, body locked in place like a robot that had just stopped working. Caroline asked, "Crow, what's your name?" To her surprise, he actually answered. The little duck bill opened and closed with his lips, so from a distance it looked like the toy duck itself was talking. And the voice that came out wasn't normal at all—it was raspy, with a goofy "quack quack quack" at the end of every sentence. "My name's Crow. People used to call me Nightfang, then Ironclaw, and when I was a kid, they nicknamed me the Shadow Bandit—quack quack." The name Shadow Bandit came from how he used to sneak around at night stealing women's lingerie."Pfft!" Caroline couldn't hold back a laugh. She glanced at Tyler, who was standing by the door with his back to her, and noticed his shoulders shaking slightly too. The little yellow duck helmet was something Caroline had wished for from her storage space—a so-called Truth Helmet. That was what the space named it, though even she couldn't figure out why. It wasn't really a helmet at all, more like a full head cover. The item was incredibly powerful, but it came with strict limits. It had to be used when the target wasn't paying attention, and it only worked seven times in total. Caroline hadn't expected it to work this well. She'd asked just one question, and Crow had even confessed his childhood nicknames. And for some reason, it also forced the wearer to talk like a duck and end every sentence with a "quack." After testing it, Caroline got straight to the point. "So ... Crow, tell me, why do you need Nelson so badly?" Crow, still quacking, laid out his motives in full detail—he even explained how he had been reborn. "I have to get Nelson, or I'll die. Only Nelson and Dr. Sinclair from the army can save my life. Quack quack quack!" Caroline rubbed her chin and nodded. Just as she suspected, Crow was a reborn survivor. She continued, "Then why did you say I was going to die? Is your Obsidian Fang group planning something against me?" Crow confessed that he had the power to see the future. He explained that in his previous life, he had never heard of Caroline , and when he tried to look into her future, he saw a two-story villa. "I never heard your name in my previous life, which means you didn't survive until the later stages of the apocalypse. So I figured you'd die. But when I looked into your future, I only saw one second—it was that villa. I saw a lot of blood and dead bodies, but I couldn't tell who was dead. So I drew that villa and added a scene of you dying there. Quack quack quack!" He told the story without holding anything back. In truth, he had never actually seen her body hanging at the villa—he had added that part himself. But his assumption wasn't entirely random. His belief that Caroline would die came entirely from the fact that he had never heard her name in his previous life. He figured that someone as strong as her, who had not made any impact back then, must have perished not long after the apocalypse began.
