Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
That night, Caroline set out to find Nelson. She wanted to talk with him and see if he was interested in developing something that could fight off mutant mosquitoes and flies. Caroline was nervous. In her previous life, those mutant mosquitoes were massive—some even bigger than Jet. She had seen one jab its mouthpart straight into someone's eye and suck the entire eyeball out. And those mutant flies? When they swarmed in the air, the noise was so loud it sounded like helicopters flying overhead. They stole food, spread viruses, and brought chaos wherever they went. They needed to start preparing now. But when Caroline finally found Nelson, he ran up to her with tears in his eyes. "Caroline, my experiment failed!" After questioning him for a while, she finally learned the truth. Nelson had taken Raven's blood, trying to copy his ability to grow and shrink for Handsy lab's experiment—but it had failed. Looking miserable, Nelson dragged Caroline into the lab. There, she saw Handsy lying on the floor—now even bigger than before. The plant was already more than 18 feet long and so wide he could barely move around the room. Honestly, he just looked fat now. When Handsy noticed Caroline, he stretched out his huge leaves and tried to wave hello. But those leaves were enormous. If it ever slapped Nelson again, it wouldn't just swell his face—it might break a few ribs too. "Caroline, I'm so upset!" Nelson cried. "I tried three times, and Handsy just kept getting bigger and bigger. He can't change size at all—he just keeps growing! If he gets any bigger, he'll smash through the roof. I had to stop the experiment." His eyes were full of regret. Caroline, meanwhile, was thinking about something completely different—how were they supposed to get Handsy out the door now that he was this big? When she mentioned developing a repellent or medicine to fight the mutant mosquitoes and flies, Nelson's mood flipped instantly. He turned to her, eyes blazing. "Mutant mosquitoes, mutant flies—they're dead meat!" Caroline blinked. Was this guy just overcompensating after his failed experiment? For some reason, Caroline suddenly felt the need to hold a moment of silence for those poor mutant insects. That night, Caroline and Tyler put on dark clothes and slipped around to the back of Building B. Tyler had already scouted the place before, so he pointed up at a dimly lit room on the upper floor. "That's Crow's room." Caroline nodded. He'd checked before. Crow's room was tightly secured, no easy way in. So their goal was the small storage room tucked in the corner of that same floor. The plan was simple—sneak into the storage room first, then find a way to reach Crow's quarters. Before setting out, Caroline quietly muttered to herself, "I stink, but I'm right." Yeah, on a night like this—dark, windy, and perfect for sneaking—Denton's wall-climbing ability was the best choice. Tyler wore a special suit with sticky pads on his hands and feet, allowing him to cling to the walls easily. Under the cover of night, the two climbed up the side of Building B one after another, heading toward Crow's room on the 42nd floor. That same night, many people in Building B caught a faint but nasty smell in the air. It seemed to drift in from the windows—maybe from the sewers, maybe from nowhere in particular. Whatever it was, it stank. But since the floodwaters had just receded and the rising heat made everything smell foul, most people figured something nearby was just rotting. Still, a few started to complain. "What is that smell? It's horrible!" Meanwhile, Tyler and Caroline each wore three layers of masks as they climbed, trying to move as fast as possible. When they reached their target floor, they carefully pried open the window and slipped inside one by one. Caroline then deactivated Denton's ability. She couldn't help thinking, Denton really has it rough. This smell could probably kill someone's sense of smell for life. Just as they shut the window and tried to hide—a sudden voice shouted from the doorway, "Who's there?!" The pitch-black room lit up in an instant. The moment the lights came on, Caroline and Tyler rolled across the floor in perfect sync, ducking behind some furniture. The place was a mess, full of junk and boxes, so the person who entered didn't notice them right away.
