Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 380 The Night of Change

With that thought, Caroline ignored the sounds of fighting on the rooftop and went straight out, knocking on her neighbor's door. It wasn't Tyler who answered. It was Denton. Denton had a corn cob hanging from his mouth, chewing loudly. His puffed cheeks jiggled with every bite. "Caroline, what's up?" "Where's Tyler?" He pointed his thumb toward the inside of the apartment. Just then, the whole building trembled slightly. Clearly, the two up on the roof were really going at it. "What's that? An earthquake?" Denton's eyes went wide, and with his round, stuffed cheeks, he looked a lot like a squirrel. Tyler came over, already alert, frowning as he tried to figure out the source of the shaking. Caroline quickly explained that Raven and Snow were fighting—and mentioned the mess they'd made in her living room. Without saying a word, Tyler grabbed a wooden pole and headed for the stairs. Denton's eyes grew even wider, but this time with excitement. "Oh man, it's a fight! A real fight!" He tossed his corn aside and sprinted upstairs, looking almost exactly like Jet when he got excited. Caroline sighed helplessly. What was this? A bit of entertainment in the middle of their doomsday routine? About five minutes later, she saw Tyler dragging Snow back down from the rooftop. Snow dug all four paws into the floor, clearly not happy about being pulled. But as soon as Tyler raised the wooden pole, Snow shrank his neck and squeezed his eyes shut, like he already knew what was coming. Denton followed behind, still talking nonstop. "Wow, that's embarrassing. You went up there to mess with Raven, and he pinned you down like nothing. Didn't even get a hit in. So lame!" Jet was shouting too, "Raven wins! Raven wins!" Raven just shook out his fur, completely unfazed.Caroline noticed he didn't have a single scratch on him—still full of energy and pride. From that day on, Snow started following Raven everywhere. There was even a glimmer of admiration in his eyes. The rebellious attitude was gone. As for Raven, every time he saw Snow, he'd pull a long face, clearly fed up with the little brat. That day, Tyler rolled up his sleeves and spent the entire afternoon fixing the furniture in Caroline's place—the table and chairs that had been destroyed during the fight. Unfortunately, he didn't have any spare furniture stored away, so he had to repair what he could. When he was done, he said to Caroline, "Tomorrow morning, I'll bring the rest of your compensation. Promise." Caroline looked at him and saw the spark in his eyes. She already knew what he was planning. "You're heading to Building B, right? Count me in." After an entire afternoon of chaos, it was finally time to get down to real business that night. In truth, Caroline had already planned to make a move—she wanted to confront Crow. Earlier, while Tyler was fixing the furniture, she'd said she was going to take a nap, but instead, she slipped into her storage space. Inside, she made a wish to the JunkEater. And got something she never expected. With this new item, Caroline was sure that no matter how many secrets Crow had, he wouldn't be able to hide them anymore. But first, she needed a reason to get close to him. What she didn't know was that Crow also had a big plan that night—he was going to kidnap Nelson. "With Nelson, I'll have everything," he murmured. At that moment, Crow sat in a dimly lit room, hands clasped, his sharp eyes fixed on the darkness ahead. The spy he had planted in Building A was about to make a move. That night, something huge happened. All the water on the lower floors disappeared within two hours. No one knew where it went—it was exactly what Caroline had seen in her previous life. When the water receded, piles of garbage and even some dead bodies were left behind. And within half a day, the temperature shot up to 79°F. All signs pointed to a massive heatwave coming. The army saw what was happening and went on full alert. The rising temperature, the disappearing water, the rotting trash and corpses—all warned of one thing, they need to clean up fast, or an outbreak would hit. With corpses and garbage rotting in the heat, bacteria and viruses would spread fast. The survivors, who had barely made it through the freezing months and were still weak from hunger, couldn't handle another disaster—except maybe the few who had awakened special powers. If a plague broke out now, countless people would die. But Caroline knew something even more terrifying was about to appear—mutant flies and mosquitoes.
