Stronger Every Time I Die
As long as Arthur didn’t abandon her, Ashley would stay by his side for the rest of her life. And if one day he did grow tired of her… then she would set him free. Outside the room, Spencer, Nancy, and Natalie stood quietly, watching the scene through the window as tears rolled down their cheeks. They covered their mouths to muffle any sound and silently stepped away. As Ashley’s closest family, how could they not see how low her spirits had been that day? She had only forced a smile so Arthur wouldn’t feel guilty. Ashley, that silly girl. She was so single-minded when it came to love. Thankfully, she had fallen for the right person. Arthur had never once considered betraying her. The next morning. All the dull hopelessness in Ashley’s eyes had disappeared. She began actively cooperating with her rehabilitation. Arthur promised her that once she got a little better, he’d take her back to Heaven Island. He didn’t want to wait for graduation. He wanted to marry her as soon as possible. Heaven Island wasn’t under Lioran’s jurisdiction. There were no age restrictions on marriage. They planned to hold a grand wedding there and invite all their friends and family to celebrate. Outside Taylor’s room. Toby and Tricia were gently wiping down Taylor’s body, just like they used to. They talked to him constantly, whispering in his ear, as if everything were still normal. Arthur knocked on the door. Toby and Tricia looked up. Two days had passed. They had come to accept that Taylor was now in a vegetative state. Though their faces still carried traces of grief, they seemed far more composed. They devoted themselves fully to taking care of him. When they saw Arthur, they smiled simply. “Arthur’s here.” Arthur stepped inside and looked at the two kind, humble elders.Even though Taylor had taken a bullet for him—had become a vegetable—they hadn’t blamed Arthur, not even once. In fact, when Arthur had felt too ashamed to face them, they were the ones comforting him, over and over again. They said it had been Taylor’s choice, and they respected his decision. Arthur suddenly thought of the residents on Heaven Island. Toby and Tricia were just like them—pure-hearted and good. “Dad, Mom,” Arthur said quietly, “would you be willing to come with me to Heaven Island?” They had already learned a little about Heaven Island over the past two days. At his words, Toby and Tricia looked at Arthur in shock. They stammered, “You… what did you just call us?” Arthur thought they hadn’t heard him clearly, so he repeated it patiently. “Heaven Island is an isolated place. The environment is beautiful and peaceful. The people there are kind and genuine. No scheming, no games…” He kept describing the island enthusiastically, but Toby and Tricia interrupted him. “No, what we meant was… just now, what did you call us?” Arthur paused. A little shy, he said it again. “Dad… Mom.” The words still felt a bit unfamiliar to him. But when he saw the way they looked at him—kindness, acceptance, and joy—it had come out naturally, almost without thinking. The two elders looked at each other and burst into tears. They nodded over and over. “Yes, yes, good… good boy.” Toby reached for Arthur’s hand. “Son, whatever you say—we’ll follow your lead.” Tricia nodded beside him. “As long as we can take care of Taylor, we’ll go anywhere.” The environment on Heaven Island was so good. Arthur figured it might help Taylor’s recovery. And once Taylor woke up—wherever he wanted to go, Arthur would go with him. Arthur turned and looked at Taylor, lying so quietly in the bed. He couldn’t stop the guilt from welling up inside him. Taylor used to be so full of life. Always moving, always talking, always optimistic no matter what came his way. And now… Now he lay there like he was sleeping. But it was too still. Too quiet. It hurt to look at him. Arthur made a promise to himself. No matter what the future held, Taylor was his brother. And he would take full responsibility for him for the rest of his life. The bullets had already been removed from Taylor and Ashley’s bodies. Once their wounds had healed enough, they would head for Heaven Island. After checking on Taylor, Arthur had one last thing to do. He left the other bodyguards behind at the hospital and only brought Wind with him. Before they left the city, he had to pay a visit to Solivair. Since the day Solivair was expelled from Heaven’s Cult and last seen at the hospital, the Tremo family’s company had collapsed rapidly. All the corporations that once worked closely with the Tremo Group had pulled out. Their stock had plummeted. In less than two weeks, a business empire that had operated in Lioran for over a decade stood on the brink of bankruptcy.
