Stronger Every Time I Die
Arthur put extra emphasis on the final few words. Raelynn and Susie’s eyes widened instantly—especially Raelynn’s. She stared at Renee in disbelief. “That’s impossible! No way!” Both women shook their heads again and again, completely rejecting what Arthur had just said. They couldn’t handle the truth. But Arthur had no intention of letting them off easy. “You’re in this situation because of Zane and Renee’s scheme. Zac was nothing but a pawn. They planted him in the Gray family when he was eight years old to begin stealing assets.” He paused, then continued coldly, “So… do you still think Zane was ever truly good to you?” Arthur began pacing slowly around the room. “You really think, after committing attempted murder with firearms, Zane’s going to get you out of this?” They still didn’t believe him—at least not completely. Susie kept shaking her head, trying to cling to her last thread of denial. “No. No, it’s not like that. They’re going to get us out. Mr. Stephen promised me—I was going to marry his youngest son!” Arthur sneered and pulled out his phone. “Just two days ago, the Yanbrough family announced an urgent engagement with a socialite from Seacity. Want to see it?” Boom. The moment he said that, Susie collapsed to the floor. She scrambled up in disbelief and snatched the phone from Arthur’s hand. Her eyes locked onto the glaring public announcement. Maris. Liu Ling’er. The wedding would be held in three days. Raelynn and Susie stared at those bold words on the screen. They had been in prison for days. All their access to the outside world had been cut off. Two days ago. That was the day after they’d been arrested. A marriage alliance between powerful families was never random—let alone sudden. It meant that from the beginning, Zane had never seriously considered letting Susie into the Yanbrough family. He had never planned to marry her to Maris. Susie panicked completely. She grabbed Raelynn’s hand, desperate. “Mom, what do we do? What do we do now?!” Arthur looked down at their fear-stricken faces, unmoved. “Not only is Zane never going to make you the lady of the house—he hasn’t even lifted a finger to bail you out.” “You still think he was acting in your best interest?” Raelynn and Susie sat slumped against the wall, unable to speak. Of course they remembered what Zane had promised. That they wouldn’t be sent to prison. That he would have them released the very day they were arrested, before any charges stuck. He’d said everything was arranged. That they wouldn’t even have a record. But now, it had been three full days. They had been anxious, terrified—and rightly so. Arthur turned away from them and stared straight at Renee. Her eyes were filled with fear. Before she came to Evergrand City, Zane had promised her the same thing: that he would never let her end up in prison. That she wouldn’t have a record. But it had been three days. Three silent, humiliating, agonizing days. In prison, they were constantly abused. Beaten, cursed at, treated like garbage. Before Arthur could say more, Wind leaned in and whispered in his ear. “Sir, the hospital just called. Miss Ashley’s condition isn’t good.” Arthur stopped mid-sentence. His expression changed immediately. He turned and strode toward the exit. “Let’s go. Back to the hospital.” Just before leaving, Arthur looked back one last time and left them with a final sentence. “No matter what charges the judge convicts you of—I’ll make sure you rot in prison for the rest of your lives. I’ll make damn sure you experience a little of the hell I went through growing up under your hands.” With that, Arthur disappeared around the corner. Raelynn and Susie wanted to beg for mercy, but it was far too late. If they had even a shred of conscience, they never would’ve ended up like this. Yes, they had been used by Zane—but if they had even an ounce of decency, how could they have gone along with his plan? Just for the title of ‘daughter-in-law of the Yanbrough family,’ they had raised guns against Arthur. And Renee? Zac’s abuse of Arthur, all the suffering he endured from childhood—it all traced back to her. None of them were innocent. Letting them die would be too easy. Wind had already given orders. The people in the same prison block would make sure these three were very well “looked after.” The three of them collapsed completely against the wall. It was over. Everything was over. Back at the hospital, Arthur cautiously peeked through the small window in the door. Ashley was awake again. She sat up in bed, repeatedly trying to bend her legs. She was tired of lying there. She wanted to get up and walk.
