Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 61 A Line Severed

Just like last night—Zac had used despicable means to frame him, and Arthur had exposed him. But what did the Gray family care about most? Not Zac’s shameless actions, not the truth, but the fact that Arthur had embarrassed the family in front of high-profile figures. No one mentioned Zac’s deception. No one even asked him to apologize. It wasn’t just that they refused to make Zac apologize. They had actually let him lead them to Arthur’s school, demanding that the real victim—Arthur—sacrifice himself to clean up Zac’s mess, to protect Zac, and to protect the Gray family’s reputation. They were completely biased. Or maybe it was just easy to ignore the pain when they were never the ones getting hit. After all, Arthur had always been the Gray family's scapegoat—the one they could humiliate without a second thought. Arthur stood up and said coldly, “Ms. Julie, you should leave. I am a person, not some pathetic doormat willing to destroy myself to whitewash my enemy. And I suggest you stop deluding yourselves. Stop harassing me. Otherwise, just on the basis of Zac’s defamation and false accusations, I’ll take him to court.” As he spoke, Arthur pulled out a document from his drawer. “Ms. Julie, this is a declaration of estrangement. Please pass it along to Mr. John and Mrs. Gray and have them sign it.” Julie stared at the document in front of her, stunned. “You… you’ve lost your mind! Arthur, Dad was just angry when he said that. You’re our brother, their biological son—blood ties don’t just disappear like that!” Arthur scoffed. “Their biological son? Your brother? Ever since Zac was adopted, have any of you ever treated me like your real brother? Have they ever treated me like their real son?” Julie had no response. Arthur continued, “Ever since Zac came into this family, no matter what I said, you all believed I was lying! In your eyes, only Zac tells the truth! You don’t even let me introduce myself as the Gray family's son. I’ve had to earn my own living expenses. What difference is there between me and an orphan? No—I'm worse off than an orphan! At least an orphan wouldn’t be bullied by their own family for eight whole years!” Julie stared at him in shock. She had never realized this was how he felt. He had grown up with his parents and sisters, yet he said he felt like an orphan. No… worse than an orphan. She wanted to say something, but the words caught in her throat, unable to come out.Zac had bullied Arthur for eight years. Just last night, Zac had framed him. Both had been thorns buried in Julie’s heart. The only reason she had followed their father’s orders and come to Arthur was out of habit—habitual favoritism toward Zac. Because when they were children, he had saved their lives with his small, frail body. Julie wasn’t even sure how she had left Arthur’s dorm. By the time she came to her senses, she was already standing at the school gates. In her hands was the declaration of estrangement that Arthur had handed her. On the paper, the signature—Arthur Gray—stood out like a dagger to the heart. He had even signed his name. He was that eager to sever ties with the Gray family? Zac couldn’t swim as a child… Only Zac’s words are true… These two sentences echoed in Julie’s ears. As if possessed, she pulled out her phone and called her assistant. When the call connected, she spoke without hesitation. “Find Zac’s childhood swimming coach. I have some things I need to ask.” Then she hung up. Eight years ago, after Zac had “rescued” them, he had insisted on getting a swimming coach. He said his technique wasn’t good enough, that he needed to get better. That way, if they ever encountered danger again, he could save them properly, without letting them choke and pass out. The whole family had been moved. Their father had personally hired the best swimming coach in South City to train him one-on-one. Zac had lived up to expectations. With his talent and hard work, he won multiple championships in competitions over the years. The praise and rewards had never stopped. But now, Arthur’s words had planted a seed of doubt in Julie’s heart. Julie shook her head and muttered to herself, “How could I doubt Zac? Even if he’s made some mistakes recently, that doesn’t mean I should question everything.” “It’s just a question. Once I confirm the truth, Arthur won’t have anything else to say.” Julie reassured herself. Back then, they had all been too busy to visit Zac’s coach. By the time they thought about it, the coach had already retired. The new coach had simply commented that Zac had a strong foundation and a natural talent for swimming. Julie didn’t go home immediately. She sat in her car, waiting.About an hour later, her assistant called back.
