Stronger Every Time I Die
“Ms. Julie, I’ve found him. I just sent you the address.” “Alright, thank you.” Julie checked her phone and immediately drove to the location. It was already late. She knew it was rude to disturb someone at this hour, but she couldn’t wait any longer. She needed answers immediately. When she arrived, she stood before a large red door, raising her hand to knock. But for some reason, she hesitated. A sudden fear gripped her. What if she didn’t like the answer? Just as she was caught in indecision, the door swung open. A young boy stood there, looking up at her with bright, curious eyes. “Miss, who are you looking for?” Julie opened her mouth, forcing out the words. “Is Mr. Nick here?” Nick was Zac’s first swimming coach. “He is! My grandpa’s watching TV inside.” The boy grinned, thinking this pretty lady looked really nice. Before Julie could respond, an elderly man, about sixty or seventy years old, stepped out. He scooped up the boy in his arms and looked at Julie with a hint of confusion. “And you are?” Julie quickly composed herself, offering a polite smile. “Hello, sir. I’m Julie, the elder sister of your former student, Zac. I have a few things I’d like to ask you.” Nick took a moment to recall before nodding. “Ah, Ms. Julie. Come in.” They settled into the living room. The boy had already run off to play elsewhere. Julie’s heart pounded. She thought for a moment before asking, “Mr. Nick, how was Zac’s swimming when he first started?” Nick looked at her strangely. So many years had passed, and now the family was asking about his swimming? Still, remembering Zac, he answered honestly. “Mr. Zac… he had a real gift for swimming. Among all the beginners I’ve taught, he improved the fastest. But he was arrogant—couldn’t tolerate others. If he could just change that, he could’ve gone even further.” Julie was startled. “Arrogant?” When Zac was first adopted, he had been extremely insecure, constantly afraid the Gray family wouldn’t like him. It took years for him to gain any confidence at all. Even now, whenever Arthur threatened to leave the Gray family, Zac would always say he should be the one to leave instead, begging Arthur to stay. That alone was proof that Zac still lacked confidence in his place in the family. And yet… Mr. Nick said he was arrogant? Nick recalled something from eight years ago and said, “That kid had real talent. Out of all the beginners I’ve taught, he improved the fastest. But he was too arrogant, couldn’t tolerate others. I wonder if he’s changed after all these years.” “B-Beginner?” Julie’s voice trembled. “Mr. Nick, are you saying… Zac was just a beginner?” Nick nodded, puzzled. “Yeah… aren’t you his older sister? You didn’t know?” Julie barely heard him. She felt a chill spread through her chest. She quickly followed up, “Mr. Nick, when you first started coaching Zac… did he know how to swim?” Seeing how anxious she was, Nick didn’t bother with formalities. He answered plainly, “Of course not. I’ve been coaching for years—I can tell an absolute beginner the second they get in the water. He didn’t even know how to float.” Nick kept talking, but Julie couldn’t hear a word. Her mind was blank. Zac didn’t know how to swim. Zac lied. An eight-year-old boy with a heart condition, who couldn’t even float—how could he possibly have saved all three of them from the ocean? But Arthur… Arthur had learned to swim for a short time when he was younger… Julie's thoughts were in turmoil. She hurriedly thanked Nick and left.By the time she returned to the Gray family estate, it was already deep into the night. Raelynn was waiting in the living room. John, too, was still awake, unable to sleep because of the mess with Zac. The rest of the family had gone to bed. As soon as Julie stepped inside, Raelynn rushed up to her in concern. “Julie, why are you back so late? Your phone wasn’t even on!” Julie pulled out her phone, glancing at the dark screen. “Sorry, Mom. My phone died.” John stepped forward, frowning. “Well? Did that brat agree?” That word made Julie’s brows furrow tightly. “Dad, Arthur is your biological son. No matter what, he’s your own flesh and blood. You can’t just cut him off like that.” “Hmph! I have no such disgraceful son!” John snapped. “The Gray family is in crisis, and he still wants to turn his back on us? He doesn’t deserve to be my son!” Raelynn opened her mouth, wanting to say something in Arthur’s defense, but in the end, the words never came out. “Let’s talk inside,” Julie said, changing her shoes and stepping into the living room with them.
