Stronger Every Time I Die
"So?" Arthur continued to ask. "Arthur, as long as you publicly apologize…" Julie trailed off, unable to finish her sentence. Arthur and Zac were both her younger brothers, and her heart was torn. Arthur had suffered a lot since he was a child, and as his older sister, she felt guilty. But Zac had also undeniably saved her and her younger sisters' lives, and that was a fact that could never be changed. Besides, Zac’s health was fragile. They had doted on him for so many years, and even if he had made mistakes, she couldn’t bear to see him get hurt. She believed that one day, Zac would change. In the end, she still chose Zac, the brother they had always cherished and protected. After all, she owed him her life. Arthur couldn't take it anymore. "Are you all out of your minds? Zac is the one who tried to frame me in front of everyone! I was only defending myself, yet instead of making him clean up his own mess, you're asking me to sacrifice myself to protect the person who tried to ruin me? Can you be any more ridiculous?" "Arthur…" Julie felt ashamed. But right now, someone had to take the fall to restore Gray Corporation’s reputation. She really couldn't bear to see Zac suffer, and Arthur already had a bad reputation anyway. Arthur cut her off. "If I hadn’t recorded that video, I’d be the one getting cursed by everyone right now! I’d probably be branded a thief and end up in jail!" "Ms. Julie, I know you all favor Zac, but you're adults now. At the very least, shouldn't you have a basic sense of right and wrong? Do you seriously have the nerve to come to my school and interrogate me? Doesn't your conscience even twinge a little?" Julie flushed with embarrassment. She sighed. "Arthur, I know this isn't fair to you. I know you’ve suffered a lot of grievances. But Zac saved our lives when he was a child! He risked his own life for us, and that's why he's so weak and sickly now. We've already failed him in so many ways, we just can't bear to see him suffer again." "So you’d rather watch me suffer instead?" Arthur interrupted coldly. "And another thing—just because he said he saved you, you believe him? Have you ever thought about how an eight-year-old with a heart condition, who didn’t even know how to swim, managed to pull three people to shore?" Julie’s head snapped up in shock. "What are you talking about? That’s nonsense! Zac was a provincial-level swimming champion. How could he not know how to swim?" "That was later! He learned after the fact! You could easily check with his old coach." "Arthur, you know Zac’s childhood coach retired years ago. How are we supposed to ask him?" "With the Gray family’s power, you really think you can't track down a retired coach?" Arthur countered. Julie fell silent. Shortly after adopting Zac, their family had gone on a seaside vacation. She and her younger sisters had accidentally fallen into the water. By the time they regained consciousness, Zac was crouched beside them, crying. Arthur hadn’t gone into the water with them, but for some reason, he had also been found unconscious on the shore. When their parents rushed over, they said Zac was the one who had saved them. Back then, they had all wondered how an eight-year-old boy could have saved three drowning people. Zac had explained that he was a strong swimmer, which made sense at the time. He also said that Arthur had panicked after seeing his sisters in the water and had foolishly tried to follow them, which led to him accidentally choking on water and passing out. Ever since then, Zac’s health had drastically declined, and he frequently fell ill. The doctors had claimed it was because he had overexerted himself while rescuing them, causing severe physical strain that left lasting effects on his body. From that moment on, the Gray family’s attitude toward Zac changed completely. Everyone in the family began accommodating him in everything. Any time there was a dispute, they instinctively sided with Zac. Because they owed him their lives. Later, when Arthur regained consciousness, he had claimed that he was the one who had saved them. He said he had passed out from exhaustion after struggling to pull them to shore. But Arthur had only just learned how to swim at the time. He was also only eight years old—how could he possibly have rescued three people?Julie could still remember how Zac had cried so pitifully back then, saying he wouldn’t tell anyone about Arthur trying to sneak into the water. The moment Zac had spoken, everything had made sense. Arthur was just afraid of getting scolded by the adults, so he had made up a lie about saving them. From then on, Arthur and Zac had clashed more and more. Arthur told more and more lies, while everyone in the family grew increasingly disappointed in him and more sympathetic toward Zac. Now that Arthur was bringing it up again, Julie instinctively wanted to shut down the conversation. Arthur looked at her expression and knew—he had once again been too naive. Once a person’s heart was completely biased, no amount of reasoning could bring them back.
