Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 509 A Stage for Hypocrisy

After changing into a fresh set of clothes and carefully covering the bandages wrapped around his body, Arthur returned to Governance University alongside Ashley. Though only a few days had passed, there were still matters at school that required their attention. More importantly, Arthur was still the student council president. Even if he had little desire to manage student council affairs at the moment, holding that position meant he could not simply turn a blind eye to his responsibilities. Yet, no sooner had they stepped foot onto campus than they ran straight into none other than Finley, basking in his temporary glory. Finley's eyes swept over the two, his voice dripping with fake warmth and unrestrained mockery. "Well, well, Arthur… You've finally brought your fiancée back with you?" Finley still remembered and deeply resented how he had lost face in the cafeteria last time, humiliated by Arthur's sharp words. He had been waiting for this moment. Furthermore, his wise and esteemed father had already hinted that he was free to deal with Arthur however he pleased within the school compound. With his father backing him, Finley was fearless now. Even the shadow of fear Arthur had once left imprinted in his heart back in the abandoned warehouse, too, was gradually fading. His deliberately raised voice immediately drew the attention of the surrounding students. After all, Finley was a well-known figure at school. Wherever he went, eyes naturally followed. Furthermore, standing directly opposite him was none other than the current student council president, Arthur. A former president standing off against the current one. These two, with their tangled history of grudges, were enough to send onlookers flocking over, eager for gossip. Seeing that the crowd's attention had been successfully drawn, Finley's voice grew even louder, adopting the tone of a self-righteous elder brother giving heartfelt advice. "Arthur, while I do acknowledge that being elected student council president proves the school's recognition of your abilities, it doesn't mean you can neglect your studies altogether. Running off with your fiancée and abandoning your schoolwork so brazenly? That's not very responsible of you, is it?" Sweeping a glance over the gathering crowd, Finley continued in a pointed tone, "Acting so recklessly will only bring shame to Mr. Hugo, who holds such high expectations for you." His words were heavy with implication, his gaze toward Arthur thick with malice. Sure enough, as soon as Finley's words fell, whispers and murmurs rippled through the crowd. "So that's why we haven't seen Arthur these past few days… He's been off having fun with his fiancée?" "He's the student council president! How can he leave school for so long without a word? It's been impossible to find him when things need handling." "Exactly! If you accept the position, you should bear the responsibility. And because he's in that role, we can't even approach anyone else to get things done." "Mr. Hugo has such high hopes for him. How can he let himself fall behind like this?" "Not just Mr. Hugo, even the principal personally appointed him as president. And he's out here skipping school to go on a date? That's truly disappointing." Watching the crowd fall perfectly into the rhythm he set, Finley's eyes gleamed with smug satisfaction. After all, troubling Arthur at school was not merely for personal gratification. It was an imperial decree from his father. Solivair, the patriarch of the Tremo family, controlled the fate of every member of the younger generation. Among Finley's many siblings, all vied desperately to prove themselves before their father, hoping to earn his favor. And so, any command from Solivair was tantamount to an imperial edict. It was an order that could not be ignored. Smiling faintly, Finley pressed on mercilessly. "I heard, Arthur… Your father passed away recently, didn't he?" As soon as the words fell, the crowd fell silent. Arthur's father… had passed away? The incident at Evergrand City's grand banquet had been tightly sealed by Solivair. Apart from those who had attended, no one else knew the details. Shock flickered across the faces of the students. If that was true, perhaps Arthur hadn't been out enjoying himself at all. Perhaps he had been tending to his father's funeral. Sympathy replaced suspicion, and the whispers about Arthur died down. Yet before they could dwell on this further, Finley's voice once again cut through the silence. "Your father has only just passed, and yet you still have the mood to go gallivanting around with your fiancée?" Disapproval colored Finley's expression, as though he were a righteous elder scolding a wayward youth. "Arthur… As children, regardless of how our parents treated us, we ought to harbor gratitude and filial piety in our hearts. What you've done is truly unbecoming." The words fell, and the crowd erupted. Gasps echoed in every direction. Every pair of eyes turned toward Arthur. Filled with disbelief and astonishment. And an uneasy tension that thickened the air.
