Stronger Every Time I Die
The fleeting trace of guilt that had just risen in their hearts vanished in an instant. "My God! He actually went out to have fun with his fiancée right after his father's burial? That's absolutely heartless!" "Even if he didn't get along with his father, the dead deserve respect. No matter how bad things were between them, he should at least be grateful and show some respect as a son!" "I never thought Arthur would be such a person." "How can he still have the mood to enjoy himself? His father just passed away. No matter how deep the grudge, the dead should be honored. As a son, how could he make it so blatant?" "Who knows what his father would think of him from the afterlife..." The crowd buzzed, everyone speaking over one another, standing high upon their imaginary moral pedestals, being self-righteous, casting judgment upon Arthur. As if, by doing so, they themselves would appear kinder, more filial, and full of gratitude. There would never be a shortage of such people in this world. Arthur glanced at the crowd condemning him, sighing helplessly. People always believed only what they saw, what they heard. Rarely willing to seek the truth for themselves. Then again, to them, it did not concern their lives, so why bother wasting time or effort understanding what really happened? But they were more than happy to spend their idle moments gossiping, watching a spectacle, and taking the opportunity to chime in from the safety of the moral high ground. It was just human nature. Arthur did not even feel like commenting on their behavior. He casually lifted his eyes, glancing toward Finley. "How do you know I went out to have fun?" Finley had just opened his mouth to speak when Arthur cut him off again. "Besides, whatever I do is my personal business. What does it have to do with you? I haven't broken any laws or endangered public safety. So what exactly are you all so worried about? And by what right do you stand on your so-called moral high ground to criticize me? Do you think doing this makes you look virtuous?" He continued, "If you really want to prove how good and kind you are, instead of wasting time here gossiping, why not read a few more books and contribute something to society in the future? Or better yet, save some money and donate it to people who actually need it. That would help far more people in a real and tangible way." Arthur's blunt words silenced the entire crowd. Especially Finley. For a moment, he did not even know how to respond. Arthur's retort struck straight at the hearts of everyone watching. And yet, they could not refute him. They were just there to watch the drama. As for Finley, he was simply hoping to take advantage of the crowd's love of gossip and criticism to give Arthur a hard time. If he could tarnish Arthur's image in their eyes, then perhaps he could seize back the coveted position of Student Council President for himself. The role of Student Council President at Governance University was a valuable bargaining chip for Finley in his future ambitions. He was not willing to give it up so easily. But what he did not expect was just how sharp Arthur's tongue could be. After holding back for a moment, Finley switched tactics. "True, we have no right to tell you where to go. But as the Student Council President, you should bear responsibility. You can't just focus on enjoying your own life while neglecting your duties." At this moment, Finley practically became the spokesperson for the crowd. After being put in their place by Arthur, everyone was still trying to figure out how to fight back. When Finley's words landed, people were practically ready to clap for him. But before they could say anything, Arthur asked again, "And how exactly do you know I went to have fun?" Hearing this, Finley's face lit up with pride. Like a man who had uncovered some great secret, he smiled smugly, full of mystery and triumph. "Of course I know." He shot Arthur a meaningful look. "I received reliable information that you brought Ashley to Mose City! You all may not know this, but there's a large forest on the outskirts of Mose City. Why else would you take Ashley there for no reason if not to play around?" In their circle, it was not uncommon for the rich and bored to seek out mysterious or unknown places for a little adventure. Many wealthy people even brought their bodyguards, just like Arthur and Ashley had done. Finley was all too familiar with this kind of thing. He'd learned about Arthur's trip to the forest near Mose City from one of Solivair's men. This was the benefit of having connections! Finley looked at Arthur with eyes full of smug satisfaction, as if to say, "I am the great Finley. Did you really think you could hide this from me?" Watching the look in Finley's eyes, both Arthur and Ashley could not help but burst out laughing. Ashley fired back without hesitation. "Finley, do you think just because you're some pampered brat who only knows how to indulge yourself, that the whole world is as shallow and worthless as you?"
