Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 508 Family is Where the Heart Stays

The sudden appearance of Spencer and Nancy made Toby and Tricia visibly nervous, their posture unconsciously stiff with formality. After exchanging polite greetings with Spencer and the others, Taylor quickly stepped forward to introduce his parents. Once the basic introductions were over, Spencer turned to look at Arthur with a gentle smile. "Arthur, now that you and Taylor have sworn brotherhood, his parents are naturally your parents too. Isn't that how you see it in your heart?" His tone was teasing, yet sincere. "So now that you're finally meeting them, why the sudden shyness?" Arthur lowered his head with a small smile, eyes warm. In fact, he already considered himself incredibly fortunate. Though his birth parents never gave him the love he longed for, fate had brought him to Ashley. And through her, her parents had filled the void with their warmth. He had not dared to hope for more than that. The moment Spencer spoke, the joy on Toby's and Tricia's faces was almost too obvious to miss. They looked at Arthur with eyes full of hope and gentleness. "Arthur… you really mean it?" They did not dare ask too much. They were afraid of crossing a line, afraid that their enthusiasm might become a burden to the boy. But faced with their eager and honest gaze, something inside Arthur quietly melted away. He raised his head, eyes bright, lips curved in a radiant smile, and called out clearly, "Dad! Mom!" The elderly couple, both nearing fifty, instantly lit up with pure, unfiltered joy. They responded without missing a beat, voices loud and brimming with emotion. "Yes! Yes!" It was as if they feared those words might fall to the ground and disappear if they did not catch them fast enough. Though they were not yet fifty, the streaks of white in their hair and the wrinkles lining their faces told the story of a hardworking life. And from them, Arthur felt something he had never known from his own parents. Simple and honest warmth. Nancy, smiling brightly, stepped up beside them and said with a twinkle in her eye, "Well then, from now on, we're in-laws, aren't we?" Even before entering the room, she and Spencer had heard the voices and laughter from inside, and from those alone, they could tell what kind of people Toby and Tricia were. The kind, humble, and genuine people. Both Spencer and Nancy had met all kinds of people over the years, and their instincts rarely failed them. They knew how bitterly hard life had been for Arthur. Though they treated him as their own and gave him all the care they could, the titles of 'father-in-law' and 'mother-in-law' still carried an invisible wall. They always worried Arthur might keep some distance out of habit or discomfort. But now, there was another couple who would genuinely cherish and care for this child from the bottom of their hearts. What was there to not be happy about? Especially when Taylor and Arthur had a bond forged in life and death. They had long since become more than friends. They knew Arthur well and knew that he valued relationships deeply. Even before they had formally met, he had already quietly regarded Taylor's parents as his own. But boys would be boys, always a little shy about expressing such feelings aloud. When Nancy mentioned the word 'in-laws,' the smiles on Toby's and Tricia's faces deepened with warmth. They responded enthusiastically, "Yes! In-laws!" In that instant, all remnants of awkwardness between the families vanished like morning mist. After the warm greetings, Nancy pulled out several large food containers and began setting out the dishes they had prepared. These were home-cooked meals, lovingly made by both Nancy and Spencer. Though Spencer was a man of politics and had the image of a high-flying 'successful man' in public, in private, he loved cooking with his wife. They would cook meals, water plants, and tend the little garden together. It was a kind of happiness money could not buy. They were staying in a VIP hospital suite, so the room was quite spacious. With the help of the nurses, they brought in a large table, and soon it was filled edge to edge with delicious, steaming dishes. As it turned out, Toby and Tricia had also brought a bounty of home-cooked food in insulated containers. All kinds of nourishing soups, free-range chicken and duck, and a whole load of other things. These were the same bundles they had been carrying so carefully when they walked through the door earlier. Spencer and Nancy welcomed the gesture warmly. Despite the limitations of hospital life, there was something incredibly comforting about a group of warmhearted people sitting down to share a meal. From the outside looking in, one might have mistaken the lively, joy-filled scene for a family reunion rather than a hospital visit. And truly, that was what it had become. Because Arthur and Ashley were both in the hospital, the family had practically moved in with them. And with them came this feeling of home. A few days later, Arthur and Ashley were finally discharged. Though their wounds had not fully healed, most had scabbed over. Both of them could move around freely now. Ashley's injury was in one deep spot. If not for that, she would have been itching to leave the hospital much earlier. But since Arthur was still here, she wanted to stay with him, to keep him company. And in those few days, with two families showering them in care, not only did the two of them not lose weight from their hospitalization, they somehow looked even healthier. Every day, both families took turns preparing tonics and nourishing meals. 'Six tonics a day' was not just a joke. It became reality. They had more stews and soups than they could finish. If not for the physical limits of their stomachs, Arthur and Ashley suspected the two families would have happily fed them eighteen meals a day. And under that relentless care and affection, their once pale and bloodless faces gradually regained their color, visibly rosier with each passing day.
