Stronger Every Time I Die
The thought that his grandfather might currently be living in the cave excited Arthur immediately. He quickly inspected the sulfur spread along the path again. Up close, Arthur could distinctly smell the pungent odor of oxidized sulfur. Moreover, the rocks where the sulfur had been sprinkled were significantly corroded, suggesting that the sulfur had been there for many years! Arthur made a decisive call, "Let's follow the path where the sulfur was spread!" Ashley, who had also thought of Arthur's grandfather, exchanged a knowing look with him, and they proceeded without further discussion. Ashley had lost a lot of blood the previous day and, although she had rested overnight, the long walk had drained much of her strength. Just a few steps into their journey, she felt dizzy. Arthur quickly steadied her. "Ashley, are you okay?" Ashley shook her head. "I'm fine, just need a moment to steady myself." Knowing Arthur was anxious, she didn’t want to slow them down. After catching her breath, she was ready to continue. Arthur firmly held her back. "No, let's rest a bit before we go on." He glanced around at the others who had been injured the day before; the cave's uneven ground had taken its toll, and several faces were pale. Arthur then announced loudly, "Let's all rest here a bit before moving on." Those who were injured breathed a sigh of relief at his words. Arthur had overlooked their condition earlier. With the cave's entrance securely blocked, he wasn't worried about wolves breaking in. They had a clean water source, and there was no rush. After resting and eating something, Ashley's pale complexion regained some color. Not wanting to delay further, knowing Arthur was eager to press on, she stood up. "I've rested enough; let's go." Arthur looked at her with concern. "Are you sure you don’t want to rest a bit longer? We’re not in any rush." Her arm must still be in pain, especially after all the blood she lost the day before. If it were up to him, Arthur would prefer not to have Ashley on the move at all. Ashley shook her head. "I’m fine. We might have found a clue. Let’s check it out; it will be reassuring." Everyone agreed with her determination and got to their feet. "We've rested enough; let's follow the sulfur and see where it leads," they decided. Seeing everyone up and ready, Arthur nodded. "Then let's go." The group refilled their water supplies and set off again. Arthur supported Ashley, cautious of her weakening. The cave’s floor was uneven, and he feared that carrying her might risk a fall. When they reached a junction in the cave, they marveled at the numerous pathways leading off in all directions. Looking at the various directions, Arthur used his flashlight to carefully discern the path with sulfur. The area where they stood was surrounded by sulfur. "This way," Arthur identified a path with sulfur sprinkled along it, and everyone was pleased. This path, among the many, was not the largest, but it was relatively smooth and less rugged than the others. The area where they stood had two large boulders. Unlike other stones, these boulders weren't buried deep in the soil. It was as if someone had cleared all the boulders that might block the path, reinforcing Arthur's belief that someone had lived here long-term. Excited, Arthur urged, "Let's go in and check it out." Leading the way, he tightened his grip on Ashley's hand and stepped into the path. The group proceeded cautiously, but the pathway narrowed as they advanced. Suddenly, around a bend, Ashley exclaimed, "Oh my gosh, there’s light!" The others hurried forward, peering toward the end of the tunnel. Indeed, there was light! Arthur felt a surge of hope. Ashley, eager to step out into the light, started to move forward. They had been in the dark cave for so long, the sight of outside light was thrilling. Arthur quickly pulled her back. "Careful!"Ashley paused, looking at him puzzled. "What's wrong?" Arthur pulled her back further. "We don’t know what might be outside. I’ll check it out first." Realizing the potential danger, Ashley nodded, understanding the caution needed.
