Stronger Every Time I Die
The hope of finding an exit by following the stream was dashed instantly. The group was plunged into chaos again. "What do we do now? There are so many paths; we have no idea which way to go!" "The stream ends here; we've lost our guide." "If we'd known it would come to this, we might as well have taken the risk and checked outside. Maybe the wolves are already gone." This statement silenced everyone. All fell quiet, realizing that the notion of wolves waiting outside was, after all, just speculation. They hadn't even peeked outside; their decision to follow Arthur deeper into the cave was purely out of trust in him. But Arthur had said following the stream might lead to an exit, yet here it ended, leading nowhere, with darkness still ahead. Arthur looked at the person who had spoken. It was Timothy, a recent addition to his security team! The team leader immediately scolded, "Timothy! What are you talking about!" Timothy fell silent under the team leader's stern voice, daring not to speak further. The team leader looked at him severely, not intending to let the matter drop. "As bodyguards, our primary duty is to follow orders! Complaining solves nothing and is never appropriate!" With that, the team leader’s stern gaze swept over everyone. "Everyone knows how good Mr. Gray has been to us! At the cave entrance, Mr. Gray’s analysis was sensible. No one wants to risk their lives needlessly. We headed this way to find a path to safety!" After the reprimand, everyone fell silent. They were professionals, trained not to complain except for Timothy. As the team leader had said, their primary duty as bodyguards was to obey. Moreover, Arthur's decision not to go outside but to search for other exits in the cave was to safeguard their lives. Under a less considerate employer, they might have been sent out one by one to test for an ambush. That would have been the most effective method, but Arthur hadn’t done that. In any situation, he had never abandoned any of them. Arthur looked deeply at Timothy and said, "Alright, Timothy is not wrong. The wolves at the entrance is just my guess. We ventured further into the cave hoping to find another exit." He paused, then added, "Everyone’s life here is precious. We don’t know what dangers lie deeper in the cave. If anyone doesn’t want to continue with me, you can head back along the stream. It’s your life, your choice. I won’t stop you." The room fell silent again. Everyone's eyes involuntarily turned to Timothy. He was the only one who had voiced objections. Seeing everyone looking at him made Timothy panic slightly. "I... I was just saying. I didn’t mean to disobey." Arthur gave him another deep look but said nothing more. Timothy’s eyes reminded Arthur of Dean, whom Solivair had shot dead. As the discussion settled, Ashley suddenly exclaimed, "Look! What is this?" Arthur immediately followed the direction of Ashley's pointing. "Quick, bring the flashlight!" Hearing Arthur’s urgent voice, the team leader, no longer scolding Timothy, quickly handed a flashlight to Arthur. Under the bright beam of the flashlight, Arthur could see clearly. It was sulfur. Sulfur can be used to ward off snakes and insects! Arthur looked back along the way they came. To his surprise, sulfur was evenly sprinkled along both sides of the path! No wonder they hadn't seen any venomous creatures along the way in such a large cave with suitable conditions. It turned out sulfur had been sprinkled along the path! The critical question was, who had spread the sulfur? Someone had been in this cave before! Not just visited, but lived here. Normally, like them, someone who stumbled into a cave wouldn’t have the leisure to evenly spread sulfur along the paths. The path was long, and covering both sides with sulfur would require a considerable amount. With that time and sulfur, it would be more practical to apply it directly to one’s clothes for protection against insects. The only possibility was that someone had been living here long-term! This revelation made Arthur immediately think of his grandfather. Could it be grandfather had lived in this cave?
