Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 490 The Hidden Exit Strategy

After hearing Arthur's analysis, everyone couldn't help but feel a chill. They had almost gone out to check in the morning! Thank goodness they had consulted Arthur. If they had opened the cave entrance to look outside, the wolves would have pounced on them in an instant! Once the wolves entered the cave, they would have been trapped, becoming nothing more than food for the wolves. Wolves hold grudges and have an acute sense of smell. They can track a scent for miles and are capable of lying in wait for a long time to ambush their prey, allowing it to let down its guard. "What do we do now?" the bodyguards asked. They had some dry food and there was a water source inside the cave. But the dry food would eventually run out, and they couldn’t stay in this cave forever. They didn’t know how long the wolves could wait, but if the wolves kept their vigil for several days and nights, they would likely starve. Moreover, there were many injured among them, and they had limited medical supplies, which might not be enough to heal all the injured. They couldn’t just wait to die in this cave! Arthur didn’t speak but started to look around attentively. The cave was a natural rock formation with no signs of human excavation. Though the entrance was small, the cave itself was expansive, with a large unexplored area beyond where they were. Strangely, parts of the cave that should have been pitch dark seemed not as dark as expected. It was as if there was a light on somewhere inside, illuminating the area. However, it could be that the distance and numerous turns made the light appear very faint, just enough to ensure it wasn't completely pitch black. Arthur’s gaze landed on the small waterfall. After pondering for a moment, he declared, "There might be another exit in here! We should follow the direction of the water flow to find it." Everyone's eyes lit up; they had been thinking the same! With their plan set, Arthur immediately ordered the bodyguards to bring more rocks to block the cave entrance securely. They also removed one of their garments each to leave at the entrance. The scent would make the wolves think they were still inside the cave. This was crucial for their safety! Everyone hurriedly followed the instructions. Ashley, having rested for the night, was still in pain but had enough strength to walk. The cave was not short of rocks, and as daylight brightened, they could see clearly inside, making it safer to gather stones. They brought many large rocks and securely blocked the entrance, ensuring the wolves couldn’t breach it. Then they packed their bags, turned on their flashlights, and followed the water's flow out of the cave. The water formed a small stream inside the cave, surrounded by little vegetation, likely due to insufficient sunlight. The path through the cave was relatively smooth, but the farther they went, the more their understanding of the cave's vastness grew! They had thought they would see the end after a few turns, but after walking for over half an hour, they still hadn’t reached the end. There were many passages in the cave, each leading into the unknown. They could only keep following the stream, hoping it would lead them out of the cave and away from the wolves. Fortunately, they encountered no wild animals or poisonous insects along the way. After a long trek without seeing the end, panic began to set in. The stream meandered onward, and even after following it for so long, no exit was in sight. "Just hold on a little longer; we have no way back," Arthur said, trying to calm everyone. Hearing this, though still anxious, the group had to stabilize their emotions. Indeed, they didn’t know how many wolves were still outside. During yesterday's fight, they had used up a lot of ammunition. If there were too many wolves and they ran out of bullets, they had no chance of repelling the pack. The wolves were fierce and bore a grudge; they didn’t want to risk their lives. With renewed resolve, they continued walking for a long time. Suddenly, the person leading upfront exclaimed, "We’ve reached the end of the stream!""What!" Everyone was startled and hurried forward. There was still no sign of any light; how could they have reached the end of the stream? When Arthur reached the front, he saw that the stream ended in a small pool with a spring at the bottom, bubbling with water! "This stream is much shorter than we thought!" This was something Arthur had never anticipated.
