Stronger Every Time I Die
Arthur sighed helplessly. He sat down, leveling his gaze with Ashley's, and spoke earnestly, "I'm serious about what I said. I'm a big guy; a bite is just a bite for me. My skin is tough, it's no big deal." "You're different. You're a delicate girl, and your skin is so soft. A bite would leave a scar, and it wouldn't look good in short sleeves or a dress." Hearing this, Ashley instinctively glanced at her own arm. Every girl loves beauty, and no one wants an ugly scar on their body. A hint of disappointment flashed in Ashley's eyes. "Would you despise me then?" Arthur was baffled by her train of thought. Quickly, he reassured her seriously, "Ashley, what are you talking about? You were injured saving my life. I'm too busy feeling sorry for you to ever think of despising you." Ashley's eyes brightened instantly. Her earlier disappointment vanished in a moment. "As long as you don't despise me, that's all that matters!" In Ashley's heart and eyes, there was only Arthur. As long as Arthur didn't mind the scar on her hand, she didn't care about anyone else's opinions. Seeing the sparkle in Ashley's eyes, Arthur was overwhelmed with mixed feelings and wasn't sure what to say. He sighed. Ashley, you really are a complete fool. "Anyway, please don't ever risk yourself like that again! Just shouting a warning to me is enough!" Arthur emphasized again. Seeing Arthur's serious expression, Ashley obediently nodded, "Okay." Although she responded this way outwardly, Ashley was thinking to herself. No matter what happens in the future, she couldn't bear to see him hurt. If someone had to be injured, she would rather it be herself! The other bodyguards were resting not far from the cave entrance, and by now, everyone was waking up. Sunlight streamed through the gaps in the rocks at the entrance, adding a bright light to the dark cave. The bodyguards reported the night's events to Arthur. "By the late night, the wolves had stopped attacking. From the gaps at the entrance, there's no sign of wolves outside anymore. They might have left." "The injured brothers have all recovered from their fevers, and there are no serious issues for now." Many had been injured, but fortunately, everyone was alive. Reflecting on it, they were all still frightened. If it hadn't been for Arthur's decision to move further inside, or if Ashley hadn't found this cave, they shuddered to think what their fate might have been. With such a large pack of wolves, if they had been in the open forest, they would likely have been easy prey! One of the bodyguards asked, "Should we send someone out to check if the wolves have left?" "No!" Arthur pondered for a moment then immediately shook his head, "Wolves are cunning by nature. They've lost many of their pack; they wouldn't just give up on us like that." Saying this, Arthur got up and walked to the entrance to look outside. Beyond the cave, aside from the wolf corpses and large patches of blood, it was eerily quiet. After observing carefully for a while, Arthur declared, "Those wolves are still out there!" "What?" Everyone was shocked. They had been observing through the gaps in the rocks for a while and hadn't seen any sign of the wolves, nor had they heard any noise outside, which is why they had asked Arthur. But Arthur was certain the wolves were lurking outside. The bodyguards hesitated for a moment but voiced their doubts. "We've been watching for a long time and asked the guards on duty; there hasn't been any noise outside, not even the breathing of wolves." Arthur, while keeping a watchful eye outside, responded, "It's precisely because there is no noise that I'm certain the wolves are ambushing us out there!"He continued to the bodyguards, "We must not let our guard down. Keep the entrance secure!" Though puzzled, the bodyguards agreed. After ensuring everyone was guarding the entrance, Arthur continued, "With so many wolves dead outside, the scent of blood would have drifted far by now. Normally, this would attract many carnivores to come and feast, but it's unusually quiet out there. That can only mean the wolf pack is still outside! And compared to yesterday, there might be even more wolves now, keeping the other carnivores at bay despite the smell of blood." Hearing Arthur's explanation, everyone was stunned. My goodness! These wolves are even more cunning than they had imagined! Lying in ambush all this time without making a sound, their unity and patience were indeed admirable.
