Stronger Every Time I Die
Throughout the entire night, Arthur tirelessly used his own clothes, dipped in cold water, to wipe down Ashley's body to cool her off. By the late night, when Ashley's fever finally subsided, Arthur was nearly exhausted. After a whole day of turmoil followed by a night spent tending to Ashley, Arthur was at his limit. Once her fever had dropped, Arthur lay down beside her and fell into a deep sleep. The first rays of morning light touched the earth. Ashley woke up startled. "Arthur!" Though Arthur was in a deep sleep, his hand was still tightly holding Ashley's. Ashley suddenly sat up, and Arthur woke immediately. "Ashley?" Seeing her distressed expression, Arthur quickly comforted her. "Don't be scared, Ashley, I'm right here, don't worry." It was only when she saw that Arthur was safe and sound beside her that Ashley breathed a sigh of relief. In her dream, she had seen Arthur surrounded by a pack of wolves. Quickly, she began checking him over, "Arthur, are you all right?" Arthur caught her fidgety hand, and seeing her finally looking spirited again, he felt genuinely relieved. His eyes crinkled with a smile, "Don't worry, I'm fine." To ease her worries further, Arthur even stood up and did a twirl in front of her. Only after seeing that there was nothing amiss with Arthur did Ashley finally relax. But as soon as her body relaxed, she felt a sharp pain in her arm. "Ouch," Ashley couldn't help but cry out from the pain. Startled, Arthur quickly asked, "What's wrong? Does the wound hurt?" Seeing Arthur's anxious look, Ashley hurriedly unfurrowed her brow. "It's nothing, just pulled on the wound when I got up."Arthur carefully examined Ashley's wound, his eyes filled with self-reproach. He looked at her sternly, "Ashley, you can't do this again!" A big guy like me can take a bite, but a bite on a delicate girl like you is serious! Thank goodness they had brought a medical kit; if the wound had been infected out here in the wilderness, it would have been a disaster. His own resistance as a man was certainly stronger than hers as a woman. Ashley obediently nodded, "It's not painful at all now, just a minor injury, don't worry." Joking, she thought back to how the wolf had almost bitten Arthur's neck! Ashley, walking behind him, had seen it in the corner of her eye and immediately leaped forward. If she hadn't shielded Arthur in time, she would probably be the one crying now! With the wolf so ferocious, what chance would Arthur have had if it had bitten his neck? Even with immediate rescue, a neck injury could have left him paralyzed for life. If given another chance, Ashley would still throw herself in front of Arthur without hesitation. Even if it meant her arm was bitten off, she would do it without a second thought; she would rather be hurt herself than see Arthur injured. Perhaps that's the greatness of love—it binds two unrelated people tightly together, making them disregard their own lives for each other. Hearing Ashley's words, Arthur's frown deepened. "Just a minor injury?" His voice rose slightly, "Do you realize that a big chunk of flesh from your arm was almost ripped off by that wolf?" Just thinking about that scene made Arthur shudder with dread! At that moment, if he hadn't reacted quickly, the consequences would have been unimaginable. Arthur looked at the bandage soaked in blood on Ashley's arm, his eyes filled with pain. Seeing Ashley's eyes turn woeful because of his loud voice, Arthur softened his tone. "Ashley, I'm begging you, if we face danger again, just warn me. You mustn't put yourself at risk again, okay?" His voice was gentle, as if he was afraid of startling her. Ashley's eyes were large and expressive, almost as if they could speak. Her face was naturally cute, and with such big, woeful eyes, Arthur simply couldn't resist. With her looking at him like that, even if Arthur had a heart of stone, it would melt in an instant. Hearing Arthur soften his voice, Ashley obediently nodded, "I understand!" Arthur was left speechless. Whenever Ashley acted coy, his mind just went blank.
