Stronger Every Time I Die
This courtyard alone was almost the size of the entire old Gray Residence. As expected from a truly powerful family, their level of wealth and development far outstripped the aristocrats of South City. Yet, unlike Susie, Rosie showed little interest. Watching Susie's excited expression, Rosie could not help but mutter coldly, "No matter how beautiful this place is, it's not our home. We're just temporary guests here." Hearing her words, Susie paused in her admiration of the scenery. She blinked playfully but did not argue. In her heart, though, she was thinking… Once I marry into the Yarbrough family and become the Maris' wife, this courtyard and the grand main residence up front will all belong to me. Of course, along with Julie's share. Though she was eager to climb the social ladder, Susie was not yet heartless enough to push her own sister, Julie, aside. As the group was speaking, a familiar voice suddenly rang out from the entrance. "Mom… Sisters." It was Zac. His tone was difficult to read. It was caught somewhere between guilt, longing, and restraint. After all, a reunion after so long apart should have been joyful. But with everything that had happened to John, Zac felt he had no right to face them. Even so, he could not stop himself from coming to see them. As his voice fell, the four women in the courtyard froze. Their faces, almost in unison, turned cold. Accepting the benefits brought about because of Zac was one thing, but forgiving him? That was another matter entirely. Julie was the first to speak, her voice sharp. "What are you doing here?" Rosie glared at him, her eyes full of anger and contempt. If she could, she would not want anything, not even a single thread, to do with him. Seeing their reactions, pain twisted in Zac's heart. He opened his mouth, but after a long pause, all he managed was, "I just… wanted to see you all." An awkward silence settled over the courtyard. After a while, Zac spoke again, his voice low. "Are you… living well here?" Those words ignited the suppressed fury in all of them. Rosie scoffed coldly. "Hah. Living under someone else's roof? How good could it possibly be?" Zac's face tightened. Right. A life dependent on others… how good could that really be? He himself had lived like that for ten years. Even in a loving family like the Grays, he would still harbor resentment and longing for his biological parents. How much worse must it be for those who had no real connection to their current benefactor, Zane? They were merely being taken in out of his kindness. And from the looks on their faces, they had likely suffered more humiliation than comfort. Just then, Zane, who had finished dealing with Zoey, arrived. Zac turned to him at once. "Dad…" The word nearly slipped from his mouth. Catching himself, he corrected quickly, "Mr. Zane, I'd like to buy them a house." As for where, he would respect their wishes. But at the very least, he did not want them to keep living like this. Dependent on others. Hearing his words, Raelynn and the others were visibly stunned. Is he really being so generous? Susie could not help but sneer. "Buy a house? With what? Money you swindled from my family?" The moment those words fell, the atmosphere turned unbearably awkward. Zac's hands clenched into fists. For a moment, he did not even know how to respond. It was true. Every penny he had now, even the travel expenses from Evergrand City to Seacity, had come from the Gray family. If he had not tricked them out of their fortune, regardless of what happened to John, his family would not have been reduced to this and forced to seek shelter with strangers. Zane coughed lightly, breaking the tense silence. "Zac, I was thinking the same thing."Turning to Raelynn and the others, he smiled warmly. "Raelynn, ladies, I've been looking at a property these past few days. It's right next to our home. It's not huge, but more than enough for you to live comfortably. I've already bought it." "You've helped me tremendously. Let me gift it to you. Having your place would give you more freedom, wouldn't it?" His voice was kind and sincere, as if this were the most natural thing in the world. Everyone present was stunned. Zac looked at Zane with gratitude shining in his eyes. The latter gave a slight nod in return. Raelynn and the others exchanged disbelieving glances. A house gifted to us? Right next door to the Yarbrough family? The Yarbrough family's location was in one of the best areas. Any property nearby would be priceless. And just because they had helped him contact Zac, Zane was being this generous? It seemed the power backing Zac was far greater than they had imagined. In fact, Zane's willingness to gift them a house stemmed from one simple reason. He would rather not live in constant anxiety every time Zac came to visit Raelynn and her family.
