Stronger Every Time I Die
Arthur said, "Ask Zac." Arthur did not want to speak to them anymore nor did he want to see their faces. He left. At the banquet, Arthur could still clearly remember that fearful look John gave Zac when he turned back. By all reason, John should have been angry with Zac, or at least shown some affection for the child he had doted on for so many years. But at that moment, the look John gave Zac was pure fear. Arthur could even distinctly feel John's body shaking. Combined with the doctor's report, which stated John had been brutally beaten before his death, Arthur could guess that this had something to do with Zac. What he hadn't expected was that, in the hearts of Raelynn and his three older sisters, they actually believed it was him who killed John. Compared to John, the harm those women had done to Arthur since they were children was no less cruel. If he were truly that ruthless of a person, then when Susie was assaulted by thugs in Seacity and it left her possibly infertile, why would he have gone to the trouble of sending someone to find the best doctor for her? He had thought that after so long apart, and especially after John's passing, their grudges might have faded. Arthur had even planned to give them a sum of money so they could live comfortably. John's final confession and his death had left a deep impact on Arthur. He thought of it as repaying the kindness both John and Raelynn had once shown him. Before they adopted Zac, they had genuinely loved Arthur too. But just now, the look in their eyes when they stared at Arthur completely wiped out that idea. They were still the same, and they hadn't changed at all. No matter what good he did, deep in their subconscious, he would always be the bad one. Even though they clearly knew how much Arthur had suffered in the Gray family. When it came to their own interests, they never hesitated to throw him aside. Ashley quickly chased after him and quietly held Arthur's cold hand. At a moment like this, she didn't know how to comfort him. The only thing she could do was to stay right by his side. At the very least, she didn't want him to feel so lonely. When Arthur walked out of the mourning hall just now, his lonely figure broke Ashley's heart. Inside the mourning hall, after hearing Arthur's words, everyone turned to look at Zac. They hated Zac too!! They had loved him all those years, poured all their heart and soul into him, pushed Arthur aside for his sake, and allowed Arthur to suffer Zac's bullying. But Zac… He had been lying to them all along. In the end, Zac had even tricked Julie out of her shares and disappeared for good!!The way they looked at Zac now was just as full of hatred as the way they'd looked at Arthur a moment ago. Raelynn stood up with a heart-wrenching cry and grabbed Zac, roaring in fury. "Zac! Why are you even with John in the first place? You and that wretch Renee already stole all of John's money! Wasn't that enough? Why did you have to go and get him killed too!" Raelynn looked absolutely crazy, a side of her Zac had never seen before. The tears that had been welling up in Zac's eyes finally rolled down his cheeks. He lowered his head, not daring to meet Raelynn's gaze. Raelynn had cared for him for ten years. In those ten years, she had looked after him in every way imaginable, giving him the motherly love that Renee never had. Zac had seen her love, and remembered it deeply in his heart. If not for Renee, he thought, he might've gone on to live a happy life with the Gray family. But he was Renee's son. The mission he carried into the Gray family was to divide them and cheat them out of their fortune. He was never meant to truly enjoy the warmth the Gray family gave him. That warmth was stolen. He didn't even dare show the slightest bit of affection or longing for the Gray family in front of Renee. Because he knew the moment he showed even a hint of hesitation or kindness toward the Gray family, Renee would instantly burst into tears and accuse him of being ungrateful. Renee was his biological mother, after all. All these years, he had been secretly in contact with Renee. It had been his dream to return to her side, to be her good son, and to finally enjoy a real mother's love. But when he succeeded in tearing the Gray family apart and returned to Renee's side, he realized that compared to Renee, the love the Gray family gave him had been so much more. In Seacity, he was oppressed by Zane, buried so deep he couldn't even attend college. On top of that, he had to endure Renee's constant emotional manipulation. Every time Zac showed the slightest hint of ambition, Renee would immediately start crying and guilt-tripping him, saying he never considered her feelings.
