Stronger Every Time I Die
Julie slowly stood up with the help of her sisters, her body trembling from exhaustion. They turned to where their luggage had once been. There was nothing left. Nothing but the signs of struggle. All of their belongings, including their suitcases, handbags, and everything inside them, such as phones, identification, credit cards, were gone. They were completely gone. The desolate surroundings stretched in every direction, barren and lifeless. As they scanned the empty landscape, an overwhelming sense of despair settled over them. The world was vast, yet at this moment, there was no place for them. Hopelessness consumed them. Tears welled in their eyes and spilled over, unbidden and uncontrollable. "Mom, Julie, Rosie, what do we do now?" Susie's voice wavered between sobs, her entire frame trembling. The recent attack had left her shaken. She couldn't stop trembling, and pain radiated from her abdomen in relentless waves. It wasn't just pain. It was fear and humiliation. But more than anything, it was fury. The events of the past few days had shattered everything they thought they knew. For the first time, they realized that failing to pay a hotel bill on time could get them thrown out. Before this, no matter which hotel they stayed in, the hotel managers had always greeted them with eager smiles, ready to accommodate their every need. For the first time, they discovered that hotel security could unceremoniously dump a guest's luggage onto the street, allowing onlookers to gather, whisper, and gawk at their misfortune. And worst of all, they had learned that street thugs could brazenly steal their luggage in broad daylight. When they tried to fight back, they were beaten. Julie looked at her mother and sisters, their heads bowed in despair, their faces devoid of hope. She quickly tried to reassure them. "Mom, Rosie, Susie, don't panic. There's always a way out. We're capable, we're strong, we can find work. We'll find a place to stay. I promise." At the mention of work, Rosie straightened slightly, forcing herself to push through the fog of fear. She spoke quickly. "Julie, your foot is injured. You can barely stand, let alone walk. I'll look for a job. Once I find one, I'll ask for an advance on my paycheck. We'll have a roof over our heads soon." Despite her determined words, uncertainty gnawed at her. She had never searched for a job in her life. She had no idea where to begin. With her privileged upbringing and prestigious education, companies had once fought to recruit her before she had even graduated. She had never once worried about employment. Meanwhile, Susie sobbed uncontrollably, clutching her stomach as fresh waves of pain wracked her body. "Mom, Julie... Rosie, my stomach hurts so bad..." She had been the loudest in cursing their attackers, and as a result, she had been kicked the hardest. The moment the words left her lips, she collapsed. "Susie!" The air was suddenly filled with the sharp cries of her family as they lunged forward to catch her. Raelynn's tears poured even harder. "What do we do? Susie! Oh no, Susie! What do we do now?" Julie reacted immediately. "Call an ambulance! Hurry!" Their hands instinctively reached for their handbags. But as soon as their fingers met empty air, the truth hit them like a sledgehammer. Their bags were gone. Their phones were inside them. Despair suffocated them like a vice. Raelynn stared at Susie, limp and motionless in Julie's arms. Her face had turned ghostly pale. Panic and helplessness made Raelynn's legs buckle. "My baby girl! Susie! What do we do? Someone please help us!" Her voice was raw with anguish. Julie and Rosie were just as pale. They had no phone, no money, and with Susie unconscious, they had no way to get her to a hospital.People always said that there was a way out of every situation. But now, for the first time, they truly felt trapped. Susie's breathing grew weaker, her complexion paler. Their bodies trembled violently. As the daughters of the illustrious Gray family, they could only watch, powerless, as their youngest sister's life slipped through their fingers. They never imagined it would come to this. Just as the crushing weight of despair reached its peak, the low hum of an approaching engine cut through the silence. At the far end of the road, a luxury car emerged. Like a beacon in the abyss, it appeared, gleaming beneath the dim sky. Julie didn't hesitate. In one swift motion, she thrust Susie into Rosie's arms, disregarding the searing pain in her injured foot, and sprinted toward the road. "Julie!" "No, Julie!" Rosie and Raelynn screamed in terror. Julie didn't stop. She planted herself firmly in the middle of the road, arms outstretched. She had to stop this car. It was Susie's only chance. Her heart pounded furiously, but she didn't move. She didn't flinch. She squeezed her eyes shut, terror clawing at her insides. Rosie and Raelynn's shrieks filled the air. The car screeched to a halt. The front bumper stopped mere inches from Julie's legs.
