Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 281 Their Pillar of Strength

Raelynn and the others were just frail women. They stood no chance against them. With a chorus of sharp screams, each of them was viciously kicked, their grips instinctively loosening from the impact. The thugs moved swiftly. Each one grabbed several hefty bags of luggage, leaped onto their motorcycles, and roared off into the distance. Julie bolted after them, unwilling to accept defeat. "Get back here! You can't do this!" But there was no way she could outrun a motorcycle. In her desperation, she failed to watch her step and crashed violently onto the ground. A searing pain shot through her knee, and the agony sent hot tears spilling down her cheeks. It wasn't just the pain, it was fury, frustration, and helplessness all at once. She couldn't even stand. She could only watch helplessly as the motorcycles carrying their belongings vanished beyond the horizon. Rosie had chased after her. Seeing Julie fall, she abandoned the pursuit and rushed forward to help her up. "Julie! Julie, are you okay?" Rosie anxiously examined Julie's knee, where blood had already begun to seep through her torn skin. Julie took one look at Rosie. Her hair disheveled, her clothes stained with dirt, and something inside her snapped. Grievance, rage, indignation, and despair surged through her, overwhelming her completely. She threw her arms around Rosie and broke down in gut-wrenching sobs. Hearing Julie cry, Rosie's last thread of restraint snapped as well. Tears cascaded down her face, but when she saw Julie's wound still bleeding, she forcibly swallowed her sobs. Wiping her tears with the back of her hand, she carefully pushed Julie back and lifted her skirt to examine the injury. "Julie, let me check your wound." By now, Raelynn and Susie had caught up. They had been kicked to the ground earlier, their bodies bearing fresh scrapes and bruises. They looked even more disheveled than before. Susie had already broken down, crying uncontrollably. Every inch of her body throbbed with pain. Raelynn's face was ghostly pale. As the mother figure of the group, she was both anxious and paralyzed with uncertainty. All she could do was weep in helpless distress. The moment Julie's skirt was lifted, everyone collectively gasped. "Oh my goodness! How did it get this bad?" Julie's knee was a grotesque mess of torn flesh, raw skin, and pooling blood. A steady trickle of crimson seeped from the ragged wound. Even Rosie, who had braced herself, found herself momentarily frozen in horror. Her hands trembled. She couldn't even fathom how much pain Julie must have been in. But right now, they had no money for a hospital, no antiseptics, no bandages. They had nothing. Raelynn lurched forward, her voice quivering. "Julie! Julie, how did it get this bad?" Tears streamed down her face as she fretted in panic. Compared to the frantic Raelynn and Susie, Rosie was slightly more composed. Julie clenched her jaw, biting down on her lip to stifle the pain. Looking at Raelynn and Susie's distressed faces, she realized she couldn't afford to break down any further. She was the eldest. She was their pillar of strength. She couldn't crumble now. Roughly wiping away her tears, she choked out, "Rosie, quick! Tear a piece off my skirt and use it to wrap the wound." Her hands were scraped raw and trembling. She couldn't do it herself. Rosie had also regained her composure. She hurriedly wiped her tears away. But one glance at Julie's mud-smeared, dust-covered skirt made her hesitate. "Julie, your skirt is too dirty. I'll use mine." Without a second thought, she grabbed a relatively clean section of her own skirt. No one knew where she found the strength, but with one forceful yank, she managed to tear off a large strip of fabric. Now, with her skirt in tatters, she looked even more bedraggled. But she didn't care. In that moment, the delicate girl who had grown up sheltered and untested by hardship seemed to have matured. Rosie worked quickly. Her hands still quivered slightly, but she deftly wrapped the makeshift bandage around Julie's knee. "Tighter," Julie gritted out. The pain was unbearable, but without medicine, they had no choice but to stem the bleeding. Gritting her teeth, Rosie tightened the fabric, forcing herself to ignore her own trembling hands. "Hiss..." Julie sucked in a sharp breath as pain shot through her leg. "Julie, just hold on," Rosie said, her voice thick with emotion. Seeing Julie in pain twisted something deep inside her. She tied the knot securely. After a moment, the bleeding finally subsided. They all exhaled in relief. But they needed to disinfect the wound immediately. If an infection set in, it could become a serious complication.
