My Best Friend’s Brother Was Never Supposed to Taste Me

Chapter 326

Arabella Rivera Haiden hops out of the truck. "Wait here." He said and closed the door. The back door opens moments later and I'm tempted to take a peek at what he was currently rummaging through. Pressing my lips together, I found my eyes drawing to the review mirror and saw him pull out the huge white comforter he always seem to have on the back seat. He pulls out of the truck fully and walks to the back of the truck. A few minutes later he comes back and takes out two pillows. I quickly tore my eyes away when his eyes lift. I heard him chuckle and bit down on my embarrassment from being caught staring. "Such a nosey girl." The back door shuts and I let out the breath I didn't know I was holding. My heart pumped in anticipation. Haiden suddenly opens the passenger's door and our eyes connected. Even though it was dark and the only light illuminating over us was the light of the moon, I could still his penetrating stare. He holds his hand out for me to take and I take it without question. "Watch your step." He murmurs guiding me to the back of the truck and stops beside the cargo bed. He held my hand with one hand while the other grasped the bag of food he just bought. The sound of the waves crashing on the rocks below seemed tempting to have a look but my fear of heights wouldn't let me go anywhere near the edge. I looked at the cargo bed and noticed he had placed the white comforter on the floor while two pillows rest on the bulkhead. I looked at Haiden questionably and he drops my hand to scratch his chin in nervosity. "I searched up all the best date ideas and none seemed fitting or good enough for you. So I came up with this." His eyes flit to his set up and his eyes grew even more nervous. "I just thought we could gaze at the stars just the two of us and listen to the waves crash," His eyes snap back to mine. "I come here often when things get a little too tough and I need to think." He admitted. He nibbles on his lip, his eyes illuminated by the glow of the moon. "But if you don't want to and don't like it- I shook my head quickly, my heart tightening with emotion. "No, I like it. Love it in fact. It's perfect." I smiled. And it really was. Just the two of us, alone without worry, truly sounds perfect. A relieved smile paints on his lips and he sighs. "Oh thank God, I thought I should've done those date ideas I saw online."I giggled as he helps me up. "Wait shouldn't I remove my shoes? I don't want to get the comforter dirty...." I trailed off but it was too late. My shoes were already on the white soft comforter. "It's just a comforter baby, it can be washed don't worry about it." He reassured me as he climbs in after me. We both sit down on the flat surface and rest our backs on the pillow. Haiden digs into the bag and pulls out a plastic container. From what I could see, it was only salad. I lift my eyes to his in confusion. " I know a lot about you Bella. You weren't the only one silently observing. " He confessed with a smile. My heart skips at his confession as I silently pry the container away from him. "I have to warn you, I'm a very picky eater." I teased, smiling when he pulled out two hotdogs that were drenched with ketchup and mustard. He hums. "Me too and I only seem to want to eat you." He laughed at my shocked face and flicked my forehead. "It's just you and I tonight Bella, no sex, just us getting to know more about each other. " He promised. I smiled and nodded. Getting to know Haiden was something I was looking forward to. I opened the container and took a small taste test. I moaned. Whatever dressing they used for the salad was so good. "If you keep doing that, I don't think I'll keep my promise," Haiden admitted, sighing and tearing his gaze away from me. "Sorry, it just tastes really good." I sighed and took a larger bite of the kale. Haiden's gaze returns to me and he grins. "Better than me?" I nearly spit out the kale in my mouth. Haiden chuckles. "Sorry Bella, I just like when you get flustered." I playfully pushed his shoulder. "You're still such a jerk." Haiden laughs at my words and bites into one of the hotdogs. "So since our sole mission is to get to know more of each other. How about we start with what happened tonight?" He started and shifted closer to me. His body heat warms me and I find myself leaning closer to him. "Why were your eyes so sad and distressed when you climbed down the trellis?" My head lifts to the sky and I'm amazed at the sight of the stars. He said we were getting to know each other more deeply. So I suppose I should tell him the truth. "My dad and I don't really see eye to eye and we got into an argument tonight." Haiden stiffens beside me. After a few moments of silence, he speaks up. "Did he hit you?" He asked reluctantly. I shook my head now understanding why he stiffened. "No, just said somethings that upset me. It's a little tough trying to always act 'perfect' in their eyes." I sighed, staring at the stars. "I may have gone a little too far tonight though," I admitted, chewing on my lips. "I shouldn't have said what I said." "Look at me Bella." Haiden whispered and I do as told. Our eyes clash just like the waves below and I held my breath. "You don't have to try to act perfect in my eyes because no matter what you do, you'll always be to me." I always hated that word, especially when others said it. But with Haiden, my heart skipped and my stomach twisted with heat and butterflies. He cups my cheek and brushes his thumb over the soft cold skin, warming it instantly under his touch. "I don't know what your father said to you or what you said to him but know this, you deserve so much more. So much more than he could give you, so much more than I can give you." He whispered, staring at my lips. "If you do feel guilty about what you said to him it's okay. And if you don't? Then that's okay too. At least you said something and you said what was on your mind. Some people don't get the chance to before it's too late." His thumb neared my lower lip and brushes the corner gently. My brows creased in confusion. He sighs, dropping my face and looked up at the sky. "As you may already know Paul isn't my biological father. My mother only got with him because we were running short on money and she needed a 'stable' man. My real dad died because of me." He croaked out. I sucked in some air when I heard the raw pain in his voice. He sounded like he had cried a million times before and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he had. "Don't say that." My throat was itchy with emotions and seeing how wrecked he was made me feel even worst. Getting to know Haiden, the real Haiden was both exciting and gut-wrenching. I wasn't so sure if I was ready to know all the skeletons he had in his closet. Haiden's eyes snap to mine. "Don't say what? The truth?"
