The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 512 I'm Her Grandfather

Matthew felt like the name "Ryan" sounded familiar, as if he'd heard it somewhere in Kreshill before. But then he dismissed the thought—people from Kreshill usually had no reason to come to Halton. Except for Addison. That silly girl was probably the only one willing to come to a place like this. Matthew narrowed his eyes at Ryan and continued questioning him. "Ryan, huh? And what's your relationship with Addison?" Ryan sighed inwardly. Was Matthew interrogating him like he was conducting a background check? Still, being naturally patient, he didn't show any displeasure. "I'm Dr. Daves' assistant in the lab. Addison and I have a strictly professional relationship." "Professional relationship?" Matthew eyed him up and down. Since when did a "work relationship" include coming over late at night to change a lightbulb? Something about this didn't feel right. Matthew scrutinized Ryan's face as if he were inspecting medicinal herbs, examining every feature—his eyes, nose, and mouth.Ryan had a bright, boyish look, large expressive eyes that curved when he smiled, fair skin, and an undeniable glow under the warm light. Matthew frowned. The guy seemed like the type who lived off women. He was convinced Ryan had his sights set on Addison's money. "You sure it's just a professional relationship?" Ryan let out a helpless chuckle. "Positive." Though, truthfully, he wouldn't mind if things went beyond work—but that would depend on whether Addison was willing to give him a chance. "Dr. Daves asked me to help out while she's away—cleaning up, watering the plants, little things like that." "Right," Matthew scoffed. "And what exactly is your relationship with Dr. Daves?" Ryan had a suspicion but wasn't certain, so he bravely asked. Matthew let out a cold snort. "I'm her grandfather." Ryan stiffened. "Her ... grandfather?" He turned to Addison in disbelief. Addison nodded quietly. "Yeah, he's my grandpa."Ryan was stunned. Just now, he hadn't exactly been the most respectful toward Matthew... He was doomed. Quickly, he straightened up and tried to salvage the situation. "I sincerely apologize—I didn't realize you were Dr. Daves' grandfather. That was rude of me." Matthew remained silent. The air turned awkward, and Addison had to step in to smooth things over. She glanced at her watch—it was almost midnight. "Ryan, why don't you just stay over tonight? I'll get a guest room ready for you." "It's too dangerous to drive home this late." "No, really, it's fine." Ryan waved his hands hurriedly. Matthew's attitude had made it crystal clear—if he stuck around any longer, he'd truly be overstaying his welcome. Matthew had barely spoken to him, but that silence alone spoke volumes. It was obvious he didn't want Addison spending too much time around him.But at least, Ryan noted with some relief, it seemed like Matthew wasn't particularly fond of Lance either. Judging by his words and demeanor, he wasn't a fan. That thought made Ryan feel a little more at ease. "I should probably head out now," Ryan said, taking a couple of quick steps back. "I'll be going, then. I won't disturb you and your grandfather any longer." "Be careful on your way—" Before Addison could finish, Ryan, still backing up nervously, stepped on a loose stone. He nearly tripped.
