The Replacement He Never Wanted
Ryan instinctively answered, "I'm here to change the lightbulb." "Change the lightbulb? Anyone could do that in Addy's house. Did it have to be you?" Matthew shot him a doubtful look. "I think that's just an excuse. It's late, and you still haven't left. Don't tell me you're planning to spend the night with Addy?" Technically, since Lance and Addy were legally married, they could sleep however they wanted. But the thought of it just didn't sit right with Matthew. He couldn't understand it. "Your grandpa just recovered from a serious illness. Instead of staying at the Johnston Residence to take care of him, you're out here worrying about romance? Don't you think that's a little irresponsible?" "Go home already." Sensing things were about to go south, Addison quickly stepped forward. "This isn't Lance ... Please, don't get worked up.""Not Lance?" Matthew didn't believe her for a second. "If it's not Lance, then who else could it be? Don't cover for him." The mention of Lance's name made Ryan go silent for a moment. He hated that guy. Just hearing his name reminded him that Addison was married. It was a barrier between them—a chain that bound her to someone else. Moments ago, Addison's smile had put Ryan completely at ease. But now, it felt like he'd been thrown back into hell. His expression fell instantly. Addison held onto Matthew's arm, exasperated. "If you don't believe me, take a look for yourself. See if it's Lance." Matthew was stubborn—once he decided on something, it was nearly impossible to change his mind. So he nodded. "Fine, I will." "You—" But when he finally turned to get a good look, it wasn't Lance. Matthew immediately withdrew his hand."Well? Do you see it now? You thought I was lying? I wouldn't dare!" Worried that Ryan might be shaken up, Addison instinctively pulled him closer to her. Matthew's temper had probably startled him. Ryan had come all this way just to help—cleaning up, changing the lightbulbs, watering the flowers—and now he was being yelled at. It wasn't fair to him. "Look carefully—he's not Lance," Addison emphasized. Matthew studied Ryan more closely. After a moment, he gave a small nod, his anger subsiding. As long as it wasn't Lance, that was fine. Wait— Not Lance? Matthew suddenly realized something. It was already this late, and there was another man here to see Addison. At least Lance had a marriage certificate with her. But who the hell was this guy?"And you are?" Matthew's expression darkened as he eyed Ryan warily. Ryan didn't respond. Instead, he turned to Addison, as if silently seeking her approval to answer. "Why are you looking at her? I asked you a question, not her," Matthew snapped. Ryan ignored him and kept his eyes on Addison, clearly waiting for her approval before speaking. Addison tugged on his sleeve from behind. "Ryan, just answer him." She had no idea what Matthew might do if he got any more suspicious. With Addison's reassurance, Ryan finally spoke, his voice calm and polite. "Hello, I'm Ryan."
