The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 499 She Give In

But after watching Virginia's performance, Addison's tension finally eased. If she had drugged Steven, Virginia certainly wouldn't look the way she does now. She would never have taken the situation and shot herself in the foot. Since Virginia wanted to twist things around, Addison wasn't going to back down. "When did I ever say that?" Addison asked innocently. She turned to Lance. "Mr. Johnston, did I say that?" Lance shook his head silently. Addison hadn't said a word. She'd been running the whole time, not even having the chance to speak. "See? I didn't say anything." Addison smiled, her expression sweet and calm. But Virginia didn't believe it. "I don't believe it." Before she could finish, Addison interrupted. "Ms. Dolton, please don't rush. "Tell me, when does someone reveal the truth without realizing it? "People often bring up something they want to hide in an attempt to cover it up," Addison continued, lazily twirling a lock of her hair. "I never once mentioned that you hurt anyone, and no one has ever suggested you're connected to Mr. Steven's illness. "And yet, here you are, openly bringing this up. You're so eager to wash your hands of it. Doesn't that seem a little too guilty?" Virginia's face paled immediately. But Virginia wasn't one to back down. In the blink of an eye, her expression shifted. "Addison, how dare you say that? "Do you forget the day in the hallway when you practically interrogated me for ages? "You insisted that I admit I hurt Mr. Steven. When I refused, you were ready to strike me. Have you forgotten all that?" Virginia spoke with absolute conviction, her eyes sharp and determined. "Well, of course, you high-born people tend to forget things. I wouldn't be surprised if you forgot even what happened yesterday," she added, preemptively defending herself before Addison could accuse her. She anticipated Addison's defense, knowing she'd try to argue. That's why she got her words out first—to trap Addison and cut off any chance for escape. Addison let a small smile creep across her face. This woman, at least before, her performances had some basis, but now she was just making things up out of thin air. Yes, Addison had confronted Virginia. After all, Steven's condition was so severe now, and Virginia was responsible. Of course, she had to ask her about it. If she'd had any solid evidence, and if Lance weren't so biased in Virginia's favor, Addison would have exposed Virginia's crimes long ago. As for what Virginia said next, it was just nonsense. Addison looked Virginia over unbothered. The other woman didn't flinch, staring back with a blank expression. Seeing her response, Addison pulled her gaze away, deep in thought. With lies that were half truths and half fabrications, no matter what Addison said, Virginia would always have a new excuse ready. And with Lance so fond of Virginia, he'd always take her side, even unconsciously. No matter how much Addison tried to explain, it would never change Lance's mind. Without concrete evidence to back up her claims, arguing in this situation was a losing battle. Recognizing the deadlock, Addison simply shrugged, her hands raised in surrender.
