The Replacement He Never Wanted
Before Lance could finish his question, the sound of a door being pushed open came from behind. "Lance? What are you doing here? Addison, you're here too?" Virginia's voice held a note of surprise. Addison immediately turned at the sound, her gaze sharp as she looked at the woman standing at the door. With a hint of caution, she couldn't help but ask, "Where have you been?" "Me?" Virginia feigned innocence, pointing at herself. "Yeah, where did you just go?" Lance could sense the tension between the two women. He started to wonder why Addison had suddenly rushed downstairs earlier. Could it be that she thought Virginia might be harming Grandpa? "You're asking me where I went?" Virginia started, then abruptly shifted her tone, "Do I need to report to you where I go?" Why was Addison questioning her? "Virginia, speak nicely," the man reprimanded her. Virginia's face twisted into an expression of grievance, and she spoke as if protesting her unfair treatment. "I just saw Steven sweating, so I went to get some warm water to wipe him down. "Those servants are so clumsy. I didn't trust them to do it, so I decided to do it myself." With that, she emerged from behind the door holding a small basin, which indeed contained a white towel. "Is it wrong for me to want to wipe Steven's sweat?" Virginia looked pitiful, but inside she was secretly relieved. Luckily, she had bribed the servants in advance to warn her. Otherwise, she would have surely been caught by Addison right now. The servants had originally been bribed to deal with Marilyn, but now they were proving useful. She had given the servants two diamonds as payment; it hurt her heart to part with them, but now, thinking about it, the expense had been worth it. Lance, hearing Virginia's accusations, looked at Addison, his gaze unreadable. Addison bit her lip.She remained skeptical of Virginia's explanation. A woman so cold-blooded that she could easily administer a lethal dose of poison to Steven—how could she possibly want to clean him? However, she had just checked Steven's pulse, and there were no abnormalities. "Addison, you don't believe me?" Virginia asked, pretending to be casual, blinking as if she had suddenly remembered something. "Oh, right, Addison, you don't think I'm trying to harm Mr. Steven, do you? "Did you tell Lance that I want to harm Mr. Steven?" Virginia shot her a cold look, as if accusing her of trying to sow discord. Addison remained silent. Virginia, seeing her silence, pressed on. "I know you don't like me, but you can't just slander me baselessly. "You can say whatever you want about me—call me bad, say I annoy you, say I'm ugly, anything. But you can't accuse me of wanting to poison Steven. That's just too vicious." Virginia looked on the verge of tears, completely hurt by the accusation. Addison watched her rambling, raising an eyebrow with a mocking smile. She had been a bit hesitant about whether Virginia was still poisoning Steven. After all, when she checked his pulse, everything seemed normal. But she couldn't shake the feeling that Virginia might have given him some slow-acting poison that wasn't detectable through a simple pulse check. Some poisons, after all, couldn't be detected just by checking the pulse.
