The Replacement He Never Wanted
"Ms. Dolton, it's simple as that," Addison said, rolling her eyes. "Since you're so sure that I threatened you, slandered you ... there's nothing more I can do," she continued, shrugging. "After all, anyone can spout nonsense." Addison stepped forward to open the door and was eager to leave. There was no point in continuing this conversation. It was a waste of time. Virginia, however, stood there with her hands on her hips, growing more furious by the second. "Don't leave!" she snapped. "I'm telling the truth. You've got nothing to say; that's why you're acting like this. "Now that I've exposed you, you're in such a rush to run away. Addison, your composure leaves a lot to be desired." Addison, not bothering to respond, waved her hand dismissively. "Ms. Dolton, if you don't clean up Mr. Steven's face, it'll be cold by the time you get to it. "He just recovering from a serious illness. You wouldn't want Mr. Steven to touch cold water, would you?" Virginia quickly turned to check the water in the basin. Sure enough, it had cooled. She paused, wondering if she should refill it. But when she looked up again, Addison had already gone through the door. There was no sign of Lance. "D*mn it!" Virginia stomped her foot in frustration. She had finally gained the upper hand in her confrontation with Addison, only to have her slip away. Wait ... Why had Lance left too? When did he and Addison get so close? Fuming, Virginia twisted the towel in her hands, then turned to look at the elderly man lying in bed. Her anger seeped into her movements as she aggressively wiped his face. D*mntheJohnstons! Whyhavetheybecomesodetestablenowadays? She scrubbed the man's face harder. Steven's wrinkles tightened under her touch. She nearly rubbed his skin raw. ... Addison stepped out of the room. After just a couple of steps, she heard footsteps behind her. She turned around in surprise to see Lance following her. "Aren't you staying with Virginia?" She asked, a bit taken aback. Normally, Lance would be hovering around Virginia at this time. Lance furrowed his brow. "She's young. She doesn't really understand. Don't be too hard on her." He had realized that many of his previous actions hadn't been right. He wanted to apologize, but before he knew it, the words that came out of his mouth were an apology for Virginia. Now that the words were out, he couldn't take them back. "If there's anything wrong, I'll apologize on her behalf," Lance said, his gaze unexpectedly soft. Addison blinked, surprised. Havepigsbeguntofly?Whatdid he just say? Lance isapologizingforsomeoneelse? It was rare to see someone with his usual pride humble himself. "It's fine. I didn't take it to heart," she said with a smile, waving her hand as she continued walking. "Wait!" Lance called out from behind her. "What is it, Mr. Johnston? Do you have something else to say?" "Do you suspect that Virginia had something to do with Grandpa's illness?" Lance's voice dropped to a low murmur. "Or, to put it another way, do you think Virginia is connected to Grandpa's condition?" Addison was shocked. She raised an eyebrow in surprise. It seemed like the pig truly had flown today. With the beauty by his side, Lance was maintaining his composure and seriously analyzing the situation. This was something he'd never done before. "When did I ever say that?" Addison turned to face him, her eyes gleaming with interest. Lance realized she was teasing him and bit his lip in frustration.
