The Replacement He Never Wanted
"Lance!" The girl's crisp, clear voice rang out, forcing them to stop. All three turned their heads to see Virginia running toward them, stumbling slightly as she carefully cradled a delicate cup in her hands. Marilyn frowned. Was Virginia trying to follow them again? She just could not seem to shake her off. Lance paused, watching as Virginia approached. "Lance, I just brewed this tea. It's good for your health," Virginia said, panting lightly, her voice weak and intermittent as she stopped in front of him. "You and Addison are going to pick up the Divine Healer. You can drink it on the way," she added, her voice sweet and girlish, laced with an innocent charm. Her big, sincere eyes seemed designed to tug at the heartstrings. Lance glanced down at the cup she was offering, his expression unreadable.Meanwhile, Addison took a subtle step back, tactfully avoiding eye contact. She had no interest in getting involved in Virginia's little performance. This was Virginia's show, and Addison was not about to steal the spotlight. However, Virginia was not having it. Seeing Addison step back, she immediately called out again, this time dragging her into the situation. "Addison, you can drink this if you want to!" "Um ... " Addison was caught off guard, stunned for half a second before awkwardly replying, "Thank you." However, in her mind, she thought it was completely unnecessary. Virginia's affection was clearly meant for Lance. There was no room—or need—for her in this overly sweet display. "Lance, take it. Drink it with Addison on the way," Virginia said. "I won't go with you. I'll stay here to help Marilyn cook and obediently wait for the Divine Healer and you to come back." Her tone was gentle and sweet, perfectly crafted to sound as agreeable as possible. Lance's expression loosened slightly. Virginia was clever. When he had refused to take her upstairs earlier, she knew he would not agree to bring her to the airport either. Pushing further would have been pointless. So, she took a step back. By showing weakness and taking the initiative to say she would not go, she made it easier for him to soften. And now, having retreated, she cleverly advanced with a seemingly innocent request. "Since I am not going to the airport, this cup of tea can go instead and keep you company," she added, gently pushing the cup toward him. The air hung tense with silence. Marilyn's gaze flickered to Lance's cold, chiseled face, watching his reaction closely. Finally, he relented. "Give it to me. "Be good to Mom," he said, his voice calm but resolute as he reached out his hand to take the delicate cup.It was slightly warm, still carrying the faint touch of Virginia's hands. "Don't worry, I'll behave myself! "Goodbye, Lance!" Virginia suddenly shifted her demeanor entirely, her tone obedient and gentle, with none of the earlier theatrics. She now appeared as the very picture of a soft, well-mannered woman. Lance, cup in hand, turned and walked ahead without another word. Addison noticed he was already moving, so she turned to Marilyn with a polite smile. "Goodbye!" "Hey—be careful on the road. Stay safe," Marilyn called out as the two walked further away. Addison followed behind Lance, her gaze wandering absentmindedly as they walked. Halfway down the path, something pink fluttered down behind him, catching her eye. Whatisthat? The distance was too far for her to make out the details, but she could see a faint black blur scrawled on the paper.
