The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 454 Something Was Definitely Off

"Um ... "Anyway, you don't need to worry too much." Seeing Lance's expression was still off, she felt like she was facing a major crisis. In an attempt to smooth things over, she quickly added another sentence and took the report from his hand. "Let's go." She glanced at her watch. "It's getting late. We should head out to pick up the Divine Healer." Gosh. Whyonearthdid I touch his shoulder? As she walked ahead, leading the way, she silently berated herself. Her heart filled with regret as she clutched the report tightly in her arms. Behind her, Lance stood frozen for a moment, his eyes lowered. His gaze lingered on his shoulder as though he could still feel the warmth of her hand. His cold and stern face betrayed nothing, yet his thoughts seemed to be somewhere else entirely. After a long pause, he narrowed his eyes slightly, a glimmer of thought flashing across them. Finally, he took a step forward and caught up with her pace. ... The air between them grew more and more odd as they descended the stairs together. "Addison, is everything okay?" Marilyn's voice came from the kitchen as she approached, her tone filled with concern. Addison nodded, clutching the report in her arms like a shield. Lance stood a step behind her, one hand in his pocket, his face as cold and unreadable as ever. However, his gaze stayed fixed on Addison, following her every move. Marilyn's eyes darted between the two. Having lived a long life and mingled in countless social events, she prided herself on her ability to read people. She did not need much time to assess them—something was definitely off. The atmosphere was definitely a bit off, but Marilyn did not mind it.It was the kind of subtle tension that could only exist between a man and a woman. "When are you heading to the airport? Do you need to rest before you go?" Marilyn asked with a smile, her eyes narrowing as she looked at Addison. She could see it clearly now—there was something different between them. Her daughter-in-law's return to the Johnston Residence did not seem far off! "No need, we're heading to the airport now," Addison replied, pulling out the report in her hand. She moved to pass it to Marilyn, but the sight of Virginia standing behind her made her pause. She hesitated, then withdrew her hand, keeping the report to herself. Addison was not sure what Marilyn was thinking, but her own focus remained firmly on Steven's health. With Virginia here, it was better to stay cautious. She did not trust her enough to let the report out of her hands. "Not resting?" Marilyn asked again."No, it's not necessary," Addison replied, shaking her head. Marilyn then turned to Lance, her eyes sharp but playful. "Lance, don't you think Addison should rest for a bit?" Her question seemed innocent, but she was secretly watching her son's reaction. Lance gave Addison a long, deliberate look, his lips pressing into a thin line. After a moment, he turned his gaze away and said softly, "She said she doesn't need to rest, so we won't." She knew her son well, and the way he looked at Addison just now—different from how he looked at anyone else—was more than telling. Her suspicions were confirmed. "Okay then, you can go now. Drive safely." Satisfied with the response she wanted, Marilyn beamed and happily sent them off, practically glowing with excitement. Addison and Lance had barely taken a few steps when a sweet, almost saccharine voice called out from behind.
