The Replacement He Never Wanted
Addison listened intently as Matthew rambled on, his conversation jumping from one subject to the next without pause. She smiled softly, showing interest as she absorbed his words. Glancing up casually, she noticed a figure pass by the door, light and graceful. Addison instinctively felt a shift. Could it be Georgina arriving? She squinted slightly, observing the newcomer closely. Georgina, with her long black hair and khaki coat, hesitated as she stepped into the living room, clearly unsure if she was in the right place. She kept backing up, glancing at the sign on the door to make sure she had arrived at the correct location. Though Georgina double-checked, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Addison couldn't possibly be sitting here. Wasn't she supposed to be in the hospital? She had heard Addison came down with a fever at the Medical Symposium, but she didn't know how serious it was. Regardless of whether it was serious or not, Addison shouldn't be here—at the Daves Residence. Addison watched with curiosity as Georgina fidgeted. When Georgina finally gave an expression, Addison's interest grew, and her eyebrows lifted slightly. Matthew noticed his granddaughter's distraction and turned to look. A young girl stood hesitantly outside, unsure whether to enter. Matthew's expression shifted as he looked at Addison and asked, "Is that Georgina?" As soon as he asked, he realized that no one else would be coming to the Daves at this time but Georgina. Addison nodded and answered shortly, "It's her." Matthew immediately stood up. "William, go check if that's your granddaughter." As he spoke, he tugged on his son's arm, motioning for him to bring Georgina inside. Leon, enjoying his soup, quickly finished a sip before standing up. "Is it her?" he asked as he swallowed. Matthew glanced disdainfully at his son. "Hurry up and bring her in." Meanwhile, William had also spotted Georgina. He stood and waved for her to come in. "Georgina, come in." Georgina flinched and hesitantly stepped forward. The deeper she went inside, the more something felt off. Even though Matthew and Leon were smiling, their expressions seemed manipulative, sending a chill down her spine. Georgina continued toward William, trying to stay as far from the Daves as possible and seeking support. Everyone in the room—young like Leon or older like Matthew and William—stood up. Yet, Addison stayed seated. Georgina couldn't help but glance at her more than once. Addison's presence in the room felt strange, and Georgina couldn't understand why she was here, sitting at the Daves Residence. Addison had no known background—why was she sitting here, right next to the Divine Healer? Who did she think she was? As Georgina pondered, a gentle voice interrupted her thoughts. "Come sit over here." Matthew gestured kindly toward an empty seat. His warm tone made Georgina feel less suspicious, as though the Divine Healer wasn't as intimidating as she had first believed. She nodded and moved to sit where Matthew had pointed. But just as she was about to sit, her shoulder was suddenly patted. "Stand up." She froze, turning to face her grandfather's displeased expression. Startled, she quickly stood again. "Just sit down. William, why don't you let her sit?" Matthew's voice remained soft and cordial, as though he had no temper at all. But William knew better. After years of dealing with the powerful families of Kreshill, he understood that the more Matthew smiled, the more dangerous he could be.Georgina, still young and unaware of such subtleties, was naive. But William wasn't fooled. "No need. It's more sincere to apologize while standing," he said. "Come on, Georgina, apologize to the Daves' heiress." William gently patted his granddaughter's shoulder, signaling for her to approach Addison. Georgina was taken aback by his words. Apologize? What is Grandpa talking about? Why can't I understand? And who exactly is the Daves' heiress? Is he referring to Addison? Why had I never heard of the Daves' heiress before? With Addison's bad character, she didn't seem like someone who could be the Daves' heiress! "Grandpa, are you mistaken? She can't be the Daves' heiress—" Before Georgina could finish her thought, William cut her off. "Nonsense! She's the true heiress of the Daves! Apologize right now!" William just wanted to get it over with and leave. The Hamiltons' dignity had already been shattered, and he was eager to leave as soon as possible. Georgina paused, blinking in confusion as she processed the new information. Addison's last name was indeed Daves. It took Georgina a moment to catch up, but she eventually realized that Addison might truly be the Daves' heiress. Virginia had never mentioned that to her! Though surprised, Georgina was quick to adjust. As the heiress of the Hamiltons, she had seen enough to understand quickly. Accepting that Addison was the Daves' heiress didn't take her as long as it might have for Virginia. As she took in the situation, other thoughts began to cross her mind. Since Addison was the heiress, she could have anything she wanted, including any man. Kreshill would be full of men who would chase after her because of her status. So why would she compete with Virginia for one? Did she find Virginia's boyfriend more attractive? Did she enjoy being a third party? Wasn't that just despicable?"Go apologize properly," William urged again, thinking Georgina hadn't heard him the first time and nudging her forward. "I'm not going." Georgina twisted her face in frustration, taking several steps back. Why should she apologize to Addison? She hadn't done anything wrong. If anyone needed to apologize, it was Addison, for trying to steal Virginia's boyfriend in the first place. Georgina didn't think spilling a glass of wine on Addison was serious enough to warrant an apology, especially after Addison made such a big deal out of it. Is Addison this petty? Is a little wine stain worth all this drama, making such a spectacle and embarrassing me in front of everyone? With those thoughts, Georgina glared at Addison, feeling disdain for her vindictive behavior. "William, is your granddaughter refusing to apologize?" Matthew spoke up, seeing Georgina stand still. Before William could answer, Matthew raised his hand and motioned for Addison, who had been sitting at the table, to come over. "Angel, come here." Addison stood up, pursed her lips, and walked over to Matthew's side, facing Georgina. The two were now only a few feet apart. At such a close distance, Addison could see the anger in Georgina's eyes. "Georgina, apologize now. You locked Ms. Daves in the dressing room. That was your fault, and you should say sorry." Georgina's anger flared. When did she lock Addison in the dressing room? She always did things the right way—she never did anything like that. Accusing her of something like that was a slap in the face. No one could blame her for something she hadn't done! She clenched her teeth and shot back, "I've never done anything like that. Addison, stop twisting the facts and trying to frame me with lies!"
