The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 240 Playing the Sympathy Card

Addison hadn't planned on listening to Virginia speak, but the moment the divine healer slipped from Virginia's lips, her steps faltered involuntarily. Usually, when Virginia was scheming against her, Addison didn't care. She let Virginia do whatever she wanted. No matter how much trouble Virginia stirred up, Addison wouldn't bat an eye. But this time was different. Virginia had mentioned her grandfather. If Virginia was capable of being so ruthless to Steven, pushing the elderly man to his limits, Addison knew she couldn't afford to ignore this. With the kind of hatred Virginia had for her, if she set her sights on Matthew, the attack would likely be even more malicious than what she had done to Steven. She couldn't just stand by. Her heart stirred slightly, and she slowed her pace, silently moving behind the two of them to avoid being noticed by Virginia. This concerned Steven, so she had to be extra cautious. Fortunately, Virginia and Georgina were both gazing forward, oblivious to anyone nearby. Virginia's expression was calm as she changed the subject. "I heard the venue for the Preigh Medical Symposium is quite luxurious." Georgina nodded nonchalantly. "Naturally, I know." She then added, "The divine healer will be attending the banquet. Who wouldn't know about it in Kreshill? So many people are fighting to get an invite." Virginia's eyes flickered slightly, and she agreed, "Yes, indeed." She continued, seeming casual, "There really are a lot of people vying for an invite. Otherwise, Lance wouldn't have missed out on getting one." Virginia deliberately emphasized that Lance hadn't gotten an invite. But Georgina seemed not to have heard, her attention drawn to the delicate pastries on the table. A small plate held pink almond cakes, intricately designed and shaped like little rabbits, both comical and adorable. Georgina smiled, reaching out to grab one. "These cakes are really something; the little rabbits are so cute." She picked up a small piece and popped it into her mouth. "And it tastes good too." Virginia paused mid-sentence, her words caught in her throat as she watched Georgina's innocent enjoyment of the cake. The planned words she had been about to say stuck in her mouth. Seeing Georgina so genuinely content, her intended speech was suddenly halted. Virginia could only awkwardly watch as Georgina savored the cake. Georgina, noticing Virginia's gaze, swallowed the piece of cake and smiled, offering her another. "Ms. Dolton, would you like to try some?" She picked up another piece and extended it to Virginia. She noticed Virginia frown slightly, as if she was about to speak but held back. Was Virginia hesitant because she wanted the cake? Georgina thought she must have read it right. Virginia gave her a strained smile, waving her hand. "No need, I'm fine. "Go on, try one; it's really good." Georgina remained unfazed, persistently attempting to present Virginia with the cake. Virginia waved her off again, clearly uninterested. There were so many things on her mind, especially after she'd just angered Lance—she didn't have the appetite for cake. Georgina lowered her eyes after being rejected. Had she misinterpreted Virginia's intention? Did she not want the cake after all? Well, it didn't matter. If Virginia didn't want it, Georgina could enjoy it herself. She took another piece and popped it into her mouth. Addison, standing behind them, couldn't help but smirk. It was amusing to see Virginia caught in her own game. Virginia had a way with words, always able to twist the truth, turning black into white. But now, when she was trying to manipulate, Georgina wasn't playing along. Addison found it quite funny. No matter how much Virginia tried to spin her tale, without someone to bite, it was all for nothing. After Georgina finished the cake, Virginia, clearly annoyed that her words were ignored, decided to press on. "A few days ago, Lance went to the organizers of the Medical Symposium to try and get an invite," Virginia began. "Hmm? And then?" Georgina looked at her, curious. "Poor Lance, he went as far as offering a contract worth billions just to get that invite, and yet the organizers tricked him!" Virginia spoke with righteous indignation, clearly outraged. "What?" Georgina widened her eyes, disbelieving. "You mean the organizers tricked Lance out of a contract?" Virginia saw the reaction in Georgina's eyes and nodded seriously. "Yes! It's absolutely true!" "You know, Johnston Enterprises was already weak due to issues with its licenses and even came close to going bankrupt. "Now, even though they've secured the license, they're still in recovery. Every penny is crucial to the company's survival." The more she spoke, the angrier she became. "And yet, the organizers took advantage of the situation, stealing such a large contract from them—this is like delivering a fatal blow to the already struggling Johnston Enterprises!" Georgina's eyes grew wide. "T-this ... Surely the organizers didn't do this to the Johnstons?" Virginia adopted a sympathetic expression. "I'm sure the organizers didn't intend to target your family. Perhaps the invite had already been taken by another prestigious family, and they had no choice but to backtrack. "It's just such a shame for Lance ... " Before she could finish, Georgina snapped, "How could they do that?! "Aren't they bullying you? The Johnstons may not be a big family, but they shouldn't be bullying you!"Georgina was quick to defend those she perceived as wronged, with an innate sense of justice. Even when she didn't know Virginia personally, she had tried to help her when she had been captured, disregarding the butler's objections. Hearing this news ignited her sense of fairness. Virginia, knowing how to manipulate Georgina's nature, watched her get more and more upset and felt a twisted satisfaction. "The Johnstons don't have much of a position in Kreshill, so being mistreated isn't unusual. I've long gotten used to it." "Only poor Mr. Steven ... " As she mentioned Steven's name, her eyes seemed to glisten with the threat of tears. Georgina quickly handed over a tissue. "Ms. Dolton, please don't cry. Take your time to explain. "And what about Mr. Steven? How is this connected to him?" Virginia accepted the tissue, sniffling as she spoke, "Mr. Steven's been bedridden for days. He's been ill, and no doctor has been able to cure him. "Lance even hired Dr. Daves—the one who organized the medical conference—but he couldn't heal Mr. Steven either. "Now, the only one who can save him is the divine healer. "But the divine healer isn't someone we can just meet. The Daves and the Johnstons are in very different social circles. This medical symposium was our only chance, and we hoped to appeal to the divine healer, but the organizers played us for fools! "Ms. Hamilton, tell me, why does fate have to be so cruel to us?" Virginia sobbed dramatically. Addison stood behind, listening to Virginia's lies piling up one after another, and he couldn't help but feel a sharp sense of irony. Steven's predicament was because of Virginia's own actions. Yet somehow, Virginia had twisted the story to make herself out to be a concerned, loving family member. How skilled she was to turn black into white.
