The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 134 The Hidden Identity

Lance's eyes were drawn to the contract on the table, prompting him to walk over to get a closer look at its contents. At the same time, Addison was entirely absorbed in the photo, unaware of his shifting expression or the fact that he had already glanced at the contract. Michael, on the other hand, was still trying to process the overwhelming amount of information. From what he could tell, Lance and Dr. Nancy ... were they married? This shocking thought rattled him deeply, and he turned to glance at Addison, his eyes full of conflicting feelings. Could they ... actually be married? Was that even possible? His mind was in a whirl, leaving him speechless for a moment. Slowly, he felt a slight tremor run through his body, as if the very blood within him was freezing over. Although he was reluctant to accept it, the clues and the conversation he had just shared with Dr. Nancy seemed to confirm that they were, in fact, married. How could this be? Then it hit him, he had heard Dr. Nancy's full name—Addison Daves. Addison and Lance? That's why the name had felt so familiar when he heard it earlier. So, she's married to Lance? The sound of Lance's polished shoes echoed on the marble floor as he moved deliberately toward the pristine white document. The private room was illuminated by antique bronze wall lamps, casting soft, dim lighting. Fresh flowers were arranged around, filling the air with a pleasant fragrance. The subtle, vintage atmosphere only seemed to enhance the tension in the air. As Lance stepped into the room, he instantly realized what Addison and Michael had been up to. In Grimwell Restaurant, only rooms designed for romantic dates were decorated this way, not those meant for business meetings. Having visited Grimwell Restaurant numerous times, Lance was well-acquainted with its details. However, the charged atmosphere, coupled with the contract sitting on the table, piqued his curiosity. The glaring white document seemed out of place, making Lance eager to look into it further. ..."Do you have anything else to say? The photos are right there for you to see," Virginia sneered at Addison, her presence radiating authority. Addison likely hadn't anticipated this situation. With these photos now out, Lance would surely not stand for it. And not just Lance, Virginia was certain that any man, seeing his wife with another man, would find it intolerable. Even if Lance still had lingering feelings for Addison, those emotions would likely vanish entirely upon seeing this photo. Addison stared at the photo in silence. She had no defense, as she had indeed hugged Michael accidentally that day. But it had been such a brief moment. How had Virginia managed to capture it so perfectly? "There's nothing to say, you caught everything, didn't you?" she said calmly. However, Virginia's accuracy in taking the photo didn't surprise her too much. This was exactly the sort of thing she was capable of. She grinned, clearly pleased with Addison's response. The way she spoke at that moment only made her feel more satisfied. "Do you really think you're worthy of being the Johnstons' daughter-in-law?" Virginia stepped closer to Addison, her voice dropping low. Addison raised an eyebrow, replying, "Of course, I'm not worthy." The words, neither too loud nor too soft, reached Michael's ears. This response made the already aching Michael feel even worse, his mind seemed to spin, overwhelmed. He had spent so much time, even going so far as to resolve not to reach out to Addison, fully aware that he had no chance with her. But now, he discovered that she was married to Lance. Certain emotions are like deep-rooted trees, silently growing inside him. They go unnoticed on ordinary days. But when touched, even lightly, they bring a sharp, overwhelming pain—like flesh being torn apart. Lance's presence was like a hand brushing against that deeply rooted tree of emotion within him, shattering the fragile calm he had struggled to maintain. "Knowing you're unworthy is enough. Leave Lance immediately. He must find you completely disgusting now." While the harsh phrase "completely disgusting" didn't seem to affect Addison, it struck Michael squarely in the heart. He furrowed his brow, fully aware that there was nothing between him and Dr. Nancy. Yet, her current expression made him doubt. Had Virginia really captured something incriminating? He couldn't allow himself to be the reason for Addison's downfall, to let her lose the life and marriage she once had. Michael forced himself to shake off the confusion swirling in his mind. "Let me see." He stepped closer to Addison, leaning in to examine the photo. Without a word, Addison handed him the phone. Michael took it and saw an image of a man and woman locked in what appeared to be an intimate embrace. He froze, stunned, and then glanced at Virginia in disbelief. "Are you ... " "Are you accusing me of stalking you?" Virginia asked, folding her arms and speaking in a tone of mock innocence. "I have my own life, you know. I'm far too busy to tail you two around." Worried that Addison might start a dispute, she quickly spoke up before Addison could respond. "The photo was sent to me by the housekeeper. She's the one who took it. I was just as surprised when I saw it. You two were grabbing each other in public, not caring about who was watching. Are you going to blame her for snapping a random photo?" "I don't know ... " Michael stared at the photo, unable to find an explanation. Virginia turned her gaze to him. "Mr. Fuller, what exactly don't you know? Don't you know what kind of person Addison is?" Her tone softened significantly compared to how she spoke to Addison. "Did she lie to you about being single? Were you fooled by how innocent she looks?" Virginia sounded genuinely regretful. "She isn't just seeing you. She's also involved with Keith Dean, the CEO of Raven Company, at the same time." Her goal was clear: to drive Addison away from Lance and make even Michael lose all respect for her. She couldn't allow Addison to stay close to Michael. Keith Dean? The CEO of Raven Company? Michael turned his gaze toward Addison.Addison responded with a calm smile. "He's the CEO of Raven Company. Isn't it normal for me to interact with him? We're just friends." Her words weren't directed at Virginia but were meant for Michael instead. "What a friend. Then I suppose Mr. Fuller counts as just a friend too?" Virginia chuckled coldly. "Miss, I have no idea who you are, and frankly, the doctor's personal relationships have nothing to do with you, don't you think?" Michael's eyes brimmed with clear disdain. "If the doctor is married to Lance, then what exactly is your role in being involved with a married man?" His meaning was unmistakable. He called Virginia the third party. "You!" Virginia's face flushed with anger. Feeling humiliated, she instinctively turned to Lance, expecting him to defend her. But when she searched for him, he was nowhere in sight. Where had Lance gone? Virginia swept her eyes across the room in search of him. Her attention finally stopped at the dining table, where he sat with a furrowed brow, focused on a stark white document. From her distance, she couldn't make out what the paper said. Is Lance really that preoccupied these days? Even now, he seems completely absorbed in handling work documents. Virginia stared in disbelief, momentarily stunned. She had overlooked the exact phrasing in Michael's earlier remarks, but the word "doctor" stood out sharply. Its mention sent a chill down Addison's spine. She hurriedly clutched the edge of Michael's suit, attempting to halt his words. A deliberate voice echoed nearby, repeating the term, "Doctor?" Startled, Addison turned toward the sound and found Lance standing there, a contract in hand, his expression filled with curiosity and doubt.
