The Replacement He Never Wanted
Addison was left speechless, "Huh?" Virginia kept her gaze fixed, not noticing the tension in the air, "Lance, what are you talking about? What doctor?" "Do you mean Dr. Nancy? There's no Dr. Nancy here, Lance. Do you need to see a doctor?" "Of course I need to find Dr. Nancy." Lance's voice stretched out, his eyes locked on Addison. It seemed like he already knew what was going on. Addison felt a rush of panic, her chest tight with unease. Michael referring to her as a doctor in front of Lance had completely caught her off guard. What should I do now? At this point, there was no way she could make up any excuses like before. Michael noticed the worry in her furrowed brow and slightly anxious look, finally realizing something was off. Recalling the moment when she had abruptly grabbed his sleeve to stop him from speaking, he wondered if he had said something wrong. He turned toward Addison. In a quieter tone, he asked, "Did I say something wrong?" Addison let out a deep sigh. She hesitated at first, not wanting to respond, but when she saw Michael's serious face, she gave a small nod. Still, there was no time to explain in detail, so she kept it brief. In a soft voice, she said, "Lance doesn't know my identity." Michael was taken aback. Lance didn't know Dr. Nancy's true identity? But aren't they married? How could he not know who she is? At that moment, his mind raced with various thoughts, and one possibility stood out. Could Dr. Nancy and Lance be in a marriage alliance? The thought crossed Michael's mind, and he wasn't sure whether he should feel relieved or disappointed. He had just assumed that Lance knew and had openly revealed Dr. Nancy's true identity. But why would Dr. Nancy keep her identity hidden from Lance? He couldn't make sense of it. ..."Aren't you going to explain?" Lance's voice was low and insistent. Virginia, hearing the urgency in his words, began to feel a bit nervous. "Lance, the photos are right here. Why are you still asking Addison to explain? What more is there to say?" Virginia thought he was still expecting an explanation from Addison about what had just occurred. Lance ignored her. His intense gaze moved over Addison's face, his dark eyes betraying no emotion, before he looked away. "Aren't you going to say anything? Why is this contract here?" he asked again. Addison stared at him, her eyes slowly shifting down to the contract in his hand. Her gaze lingered there. "Why do you have Dr. Nancy's contract?" Lance's question came quickly, his tone growing sharper. "Oh wait, it's actually the cooperation agreement between Dr. Nancy and the Fullers." Lance picked up the contract and leaned in to inspect it more closely. "Acygine?" He then turned his gaze to Michael, asking "Is this the Fuller's new project? Are you avoiding a partnership with our family because of it?" "Exactly, is there an issue with that? When it comes to the Johnstons and Dr. Nancy, anyone with a sharp eye would choose Dr. Nancy, right?" Michael replied calmly. Why was Lance speaking to the doctor like this? Michael decided to confront him head-on. After all, Grandma had already clashed with Lance, so there was nothing left to fear. "Or do you believe the Johnstons can match up to Dr. Nancy?" he asked seriously, almost as if he were questioning Lance about who was more valuable between Dr. Nancy and the Johnstons. Lance fell silent. Who is Dr. Nancy? Not only do the Johnstons fall short, but the entire Halton isn't comparable to Dr. Nancy. Even if all the pharmaceutical companies in Halton were acquired, it wouldn't be as lucrative as working with Dr. Nancy. Lance held the stack of contracts, which seemed neither too thick nor too thin. As the papers gently shifted with his fingers, they made a soft rustling sound. With the documents swaying, his mind wandered. Could it be that the Dr. Nancy we had been desperately searching for all this time was actually Addison? A young woman with no apparent background? ... Addison, who had been feeling panicked, found that after hearing Michael's words, her anxiety slowly began to dissipate. "Lance, put the contract down," her voice was steady, though there was a commanding undertone. The words carried a certain weight in the quiet, refined room. Lance's hand, which had been swaying, came to a sudden stop. He lifted his gaze to meet hers. "Is this how Steven trains you? Who gave you the authority to take someone else's things so casually? How uncouth," she said sharply. Lance narrowed his eyes slightly. "Don't you get it? Are all the Johnstons like this? Is it a family tradition to take things without permission? This arrogance is truly revolting." Addison gazed at Lance, and their eyes met in a fixed stare. "How dare you talk to Lance like that? Aren't you the one with no manners?" Virginia snapped, furious. "Lance has limits to his patience. If you really push him too far, you'll have to face the consequences. Don't say I didn't warn you." Addison was speaking to Lance in such a bold way, whether she was truly foolish or just pretending, it was clear she was bold. The look on Lance's face at that moment was so menacing that it made Virginia's heart race. The expression was all too familiar, reminding her of the last time she saw it. Virginia shook her head. It seemed that after three years with the Johnstons, Addison still hadn't grasped Lance's temperament. "How severe are these consequences? Since you're so familiar with them, have you ever managed to upset Lance?" Addison taunted. "Of course not! I was just trying to warn you, so what's with that attitude?" Virginia sneered. "Just wait and see, then."Virginia crossed her arms, a smug expression on her face as she patiently awaited the next move. However, in the blink of an eye, she was left speechless. Her eyes widened in shock as she watched Lance place the contract he had just retrieved back on the table. "Lance? What are you doing?" How could he remain calm and even place the contract down? This was completely out of character for him. "Lance, why are you listening to Addison?" Virginia's voice echoed in Lance's mind as he frowned and said, "Get out." Huh? Virginia's eyes went wide, unable to believe that he had actually said those words. She pointed at herself, "Are you talking to me?" Lance simply nodded. Addison raised an eyebrow, standing quietly to the side, observing the fascinating shift in Virginia's expression without saying a word. Virginia stood frozen, taking a moment to process what she had just heard. Lance had actually told me to leave? After a long pause, she finally let out a startled exclamation, at a loss for words. Her usual sharp tongue was utterly silenced by the sudden cold command, leaving her speechless. "Get out," Lance repeated, his tone calm and patient. Virginia shot a furious glare at Addison, but she didn't dare argue further. With a heavy heart, she swallowed her pride and walked out. As her figure disappeared through the door, Lance turned to Addison. "Let's talk, shall we?" His voice was serious now. "What's there to talk about? What could we possibly discuss?" "We need to discuss a potential partnership. The Johnstons are genuinely interested in working together," Lance said, his tone now completely lacking the anger it had carried earlier. "But I'm not interested in talking to the Johnstons," Addison replied, her eyes emotionless as her voice turned icy cold. Her tone was so different from usual that it felt like an entirely different person was speaking.
