Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Watching the seawater continue to push forward, Natalie and Cassian both fell silent. The thought crept into Natalie's mind. It won't slowly swallow the land and reach their home, will it? She frowned. That hadn't happened in her last life. She had survived a full year in Frostfall. Braxton had said the same; he had even lived through Evernight. None of that included the ocean taking over the land. But this time was different. There were too many changes. Even Natalie wasn't sure anymore. Most importantly, the helicopter's fuel range was almost at its limit. Another hour passed. Natalie finally pulled the helicopter and herself into the storage space. Inside, the two of them refueled the helicopter while resting and eating. With their human nearby, the three little ones were much calmer. Lucky quietly drank spring water. Cash pecked at his feed. Baron ate without making a fuss. Natalie and Cassian each had a boxed meal—two meat dishes and two vegetable dishes. They ate simply, without ceremony. Cassian noticed that Natalie was eating much faster than usual and reminded her. "Slow down. There's no rush." Natalie, who normally ate slowly and carefully, froze for a second. She realized that in just a few minutes, she had already eaten nearly half her meal. She quickly forced herself to slow down. She gave a small, bitter smile. "It feels like I'm racing the ocean. I didn't even notice I was eating in a hurry." Cassian moved the chicken leg from his container into hers and spoke gently. "There's no need to rush. We're in the air. If we run out of fuel, we can always go back into the storage space. No matter how fast the water moves, it won't affect us much. We can take it slow." Natalie shook her head. "That won't work. Time in the storage space is limited. Most of the time, we still have to stay outside. The weather and the helicopter aren't stable either. I won't feel safe until we're back on land." The cold was brutal. The sky was full of shifting air currents and icy winds. In conditions like this, a helicopter was never meant to stay airborne for long. They had already crashed once before. Last time, there had been land beneath them. This time, it was the sea. She had originally planned to check how much the storage space had upgraded. But, given the current situation, that would have to wait. If they stayed inside the storage space for eight or nine hours, who knew how far the ocean would spread by the time they came out? Worse still, if they used up all the time limit and something went wrong with the helicopter, they wouldn't even have a place to hide. As Natalie ate, she checked the yacht in her storage space with her mind. She used to feel very confident about her gear. Now, that confidence was gone. She had thought that once she stored the yacht, they would be ready for land, sea, and air. Now she realized that was far from enough. A yacht had strict limits. It could only sail on calm water. Before the apocalypse, it was amazing. But in this world, it was not enough. She needed something that could survive underwater. Something like a submarine. Only then would they truly be ready for land, sea, and air. Cassian noticed her biting her spoon, brows tightly knit. He asked, "What are you thinking about?" Natalie snapped back to reality and looked at him. "Where do you think we could get a submarine?" Cassian didn't hesitate. "From the government." That was exactly what Natalie thought too. She sighed. "That won't be easy." Then she couldn't help complaining, "You're so rich. Why didn't you buy a submarine before?" Cassian laughed. "I never needed one." Northlorn wasn't near the ocean. He also had no special interest in the sea. There was no reason to own a submarine. Natalie pursed her lips. She knew she was being unreasonable. He couldn't have known the world would end one day. The fact that he had already stocked three huge warehouses was lucky enough. Seeing her disappointment, Cassian smiled and said, "It's fine if we don't have one. We can just buy one now." Natalie raised an eyebrow. "Buy one?" Cassian nodded, completely sure. "Most things in this world can be bought with money." Then he added, emphasizing his point, "We can buy from the government too." Natalie suddenly understood. This was the same man who had once used fuel to carve out a private zone inside an official base. As long as the price was right, nothing was impossible. The supplies in her storage space might not have been impressive before the apocalypse. But now? They were worth more than an entire nation. Natalie's eyes lit up. "Let's do it!" Then she thought of something else. "Oh! The building materials in the northwest warehouse."When they stored those materials, they had already talked about this. Construction supplies were extremely rare now. They could trade them with the official base for valuable items. Back then, they didn't know what to trade for. Now, the answer was clear. A submarine. Cassian nodded calmly. "Exactly." Natalie raised her brow. "You already thought of this, didn't you?" Cassian gave a short hum and smiled. "Eat first. Don't stress." Natalie nodded, picked up the chicken leg on her plate, and took a bite. Inside, she quietly sighed. There really was a difference between people.
