Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 675 Borrowed Brains

Even though Natalie had lived one extra life, she still knew her limits. She had more experience now and understood many things better than before. But when it came to thinking things through, she was still no match for Cassian. His mind worked faster than hers. He stayed calm, thought clearly, and always looked at the whole picture. That gap could not be closed by just one second chance at life. But that was fine. Natalie took a sip of her drink and quietly glanced at the man beside her. After all, she had already made him hers. What belonged to him belonged to her too—including that sharp, flexible brain of his. No wonder people said marriage was a reshuffling of resources. What she gained was not just the supplies in those hidden warehouses. She also gained his intelligence, his experience, and his judgment. And, of course, a man who looked very good. Cassian had no idea what wild thoughts were running through her head. After finishing his meal, he rested his chin on his hand and silently watched her. Natalie felt her face heat up under his stare. "What are you looking at?" Cassian had clearly recovered from the terror of escaping death and the exhaustion of nonstop flying. He sounded relaxed and in a good mood. "Admiring my pretty wife." Natalie's ears burned. She shot him a glare. "You beast! What are you staring at?" She had told him already; he was not allowed to say things that made her heart race like that. "A beast?" Cassian laughed. "I'm just looking at my own wife. How does that make me a beast?" Natalie cleared her throat, quickly finished her food, and tidied the table. Then she turned and headed back to the helicopter. "Enough talking. We're moving." Cassian smiled and followed her onboard. As soon as the couple boarded, the three animals rushed after them. They were afraid that if danger came again, they might not be close to her. Flying for a while. Resting for a while. At last, after the sea had swallowed two entire states, it stopped. Maybe the long mountain ranges nearby had blocked it and weakened its force. Or maybe the water had simply traveled too far and lost its strength. Either way, the ocean finally went still. Natalie and Cassian both let out a long breath. They no longer had to race forward in a panic. When they looked down, they saw survivors peeking out of their homes. No one cared about the freezing weather anymore. Windows opened one after another, faces full of shock. They lived far from the coast. In the past, seeing the ocean meant a long train ride or a flight. Who could have imagined that after one night's sleep, their homes would turn into ocean-view houses? They never saw the terrifying face of the tsunami. They did not know that without the distant mountain ranges slowing it down, their land would already be underwater. They only knew one thing. The world had truly gone mad. Over the past few years of the apocalypse, people had seen all kinds of strange disasters. But turning into a coastal city overnight? That was still beyond anyone's imagination. Cassian looked down below and suggested, "Don't stop here. Let's keep moving."No one knew if the sea would suddenly go crazy again. Natalie nodded. "Yeah. Let's keep going. Don't stop." The farther they got from the ocean, the safer they would be. Before leaving, Natalie took one last look at the city. The people here were lucky. The tsunami had taken so many lives, yet when it reached this place, it seemed to lose its strength. The water calmed down and stopped. She hoped their luck would last and that the sea would stay right there. The helicopter flew farther and farther away. Even though the tsunami had stopped, Natalie still couldn't let go of the idea of getting a submarine. Anything could happen in this messed-up apocalypse. She wouldn't even rule out the chance that all land might one day be swallowed by the ocean. They flew on for a while longer. Natalie soon noticed something odd. Cassian wasn't just heading north. He was also slowly moving east. She asked in surprise, "Aren't we going back to Northland?" Cassian gave a short grunt, about to answer, when he noticed the fuel was almost gone again. So, they returned to the storage space first. Cassian refueled the helicopter, then explained, "Let's look for the Eastern Base." Natalie blinked. "Eastern Base?" "Yeah," Cassian said. "Didn't you want to buy a submarine?" Natalie had told him before that in her last life, there were four major official bases—east, south, west, and north. That was why he wanted to search for the eastern one.Only then did Natalie fully catch on. Right. There wasn't just one official base in the north. It made sense to check the others too. You wouldn't buy clothes without comparing stores. A submarine was a much bigger deal. And submarines had to be near the ocean. The north and west had no sea. Only the east and south did. The south was swallowed by a vast ocean. Even if the southern official base had somehow survived underwater, there was no way the two of them could dive down to find it. More likely, that base was already... Natalie felt a chill in her chest. "The east is close to the sea too," she said quietly. "It won't be flooded by the tsunami as well, right?"
