Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Jarvis sounded impatient. "Matt! Let's go!" Matthew wasn't listening at all. He was mumbling to himself, "So pretty..." It was all about comparison. When he'd seen those women outside, their looks and profession had gotten him thinking dirty thoughts. But the moment he saw these two girls, his standards changed completely. The women from earlier didn't interest him at all anymore. Compared to those women from earlier, these two were just on another level. Matthew stared at them without blinking, like his eyes were about to pop out. Selina and Guinevere felt grossed out by the way he ogled them. Their faces twisted with disgust. What's up with that big idiot hanging around this short creep? He looks like a total pervert. Their feet were chained, so they could only endure being stared at, feeling exposed and uneasy. Desperate, they shot pleading looks at Selene. They figured Selene should be able to unlock their chains. If they could get free, maybe they'd have a shot against these two men. But Matthew didn't even notice Selene, since her plain face made her blend in. Seeing that Matthew was practically drooling, she felt a little grateful for being so ordinary. Honestly, in times like these, blending in with the crowd keeps you safer. She caught the other girls' looks for help, but she didn't hand over the key. If she gave them the key, these men would realize she wasn't really a prisoner, which could bring all kinds of trouble. She wasn't risking that. So, she tried to calm the girls with a look, then shifted her attention to the bossy little guy. Between the two, it was obvious he was calling the shots. If she could get him to leave, the big guy would follow. "What kind of person are you looking for? What's with the bird?" Jarvis was quick to answer. "They're killers! They murdered my brother! Got any info?" Hearing that, Selene felt lucky she hadn't given up the couple. These guys were here for revenge! She repeated, "We've never seen any birds or anyone with a bird." Then she tested him. "So what's going on outside now?" Jarvis answered flatly, "Everyone out there's dead. You guys are free now." Getting confirmation, Selene felt relieved and pretty proud of herself. I knew I made the right call! That couple actually wiped out the whole Greendale Gang! She was glad she'd acted fast. With judgment like mine, I'll outlive everybody! She used a light tone to hurry Jarvis along. "The gunfire has only just stopped. If the person you want is alive, they haven't gone far. Wait any longer, though, and they might slip away." Jarvis grew even more anxious and shoved Matthew hard. "Move it! Keep dragging your feet, and I'll gut you!" Matthew looked longingly at Selina and Guinevere and whined, "Jarvis, just wait a sec, I'll be quick—just give me three minutes..." Jarvis snapped, "No way! We stick to the plan. No distractions!"Matthew didn't want to follow orders, but he was too scared to go against him, so he just stood there, lost. Jarvis saw Matthew hesitate. He got furious and waved his knife at him. "I said move! Now!" Three minutes might not sound like much, but even one minute could mean losing their target. His uncle had drilled that into him when teaching him shadow arts. Besides, the family elders had always warned him—women were nothing but trouble. He wasn't about to let his buddy get distracted now. "When this is over, I'll get you ten girls, all right? For now, let's go!" Matthew glanced at the knife, still hesitating. Pretty girls were a rarity now. Ten average girls from the hall outside didn't come close to these two. "Jarvis, why not just take them with us? We'll stick to the plan, and when things calm down, I could—" Selina and Guinevere turned pale at the thought of going from the frying pan into the fire. Luckily, Jarvis didn't indulge him. He stomped out, yelling, "I told you, women are nothing but trouble! Move it! Say another word, and I'll gut you!" Jarvis figured those two girls, so skinny and weak and probably chained for ages, wouldn't keep up. Only a fool would bring such baggage along. Watching Jarvis leave, Matthew gave the girls one last longing look, then reluctantly jogged after Jarvis.
