Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 648 Are You Deaf?

After a while, the wrecked, smoke-filled truck finally let out a creak as the passenger door was forced open. Two men dragged themselves out, worn out and shaky. Right away, the crowd rushed over, yelling, "Hey, you crashed into our place! Pay up!" Matthew's head was covered in blood. He couldn't even tell how many people were standing in front of him. He wobbled, holding his head and shaking it, trying to get his senses back. The ringing in his ears wouldn't stop. Jarvis, on the other hand, looked way more stable. He was bleeding as well, but his eyes stayed sharp and cold. The moment he stepped out, he reached into his clothes to feel for the feather. When he touched it, he breathed out slowly. If that thing was damaged, he'd lose his only lead to finding his enemy. The crowd saw the two men ignore them and instantly started shouting louder. "Are you deaf? Can't you hear us?!" "Don't pretend nothing happened! You're not leaving unless you pay!" "Money or repairs—pick one!" Matthew's ears finally cleared up a little. He turned and stared at the wreck behind them. Only then did he realize the truck had punched a huge hole straight into the building. Glass was everywhere. He couldn't help thanking every god he knew. His life must be ridiculously tough to kill. After a crash that bad, he actually managed to survive. He looked at the furious people and quickly apologized. "Sorry! We didn't mean to—""Does that fix anything? You blasted open the whole first floor! The building is unsafe now! Where are all these families supposed to live?" "Exactly! It's freezing. You expect us to move out right now?" "Pay up, or you're stuck here!" Facing the angry victims, Matthew had no clue what to do. He turned helplessly to Jarvis. Where were they supposed to get grain? For years, they'd just wandered around taking whatever they needed. Basically, they survived by robbing people. Jarvis didn't notice Matthew's silent plea. He just shut everyone out like they didn't exist, closed his eyes, and started his tracking technique again. They had reached the city already. Now he needed the exact direction. The residents watched the short guy close his eyes and ignore them, and they exploded. "Oh, so you're gonna pretend you're blind now? Waving your hands around—trying to scare us?" Cursing, a few of them charged forward to go rough him up. Matthew panicked and rushed in. "Hey! Don't mess with him—" Nobody listened. They all rushed over at once, ready to teach that scrawny, arrogant man a lesson. Jarvis' eyes snapped open. "North side! Not far!" Then his expression hardened. In a blink, he shot backward, leaving almost a ghost-like blur behind him. While everyone was stunned from punching nothing but air, he swung his arms out. A wave of throwing darts shot out.Screams and shrieks filled the street. Every dart hit an eyeball—Jarvis never missed. Matthew had seen it tons of times, but it still shocked him. That was Jarvis' signature move—shadow darts. He'd mastered it so well that he always hit exactly where he aimed. And then came the part Matthew already expected. He stepped aside like he was getting out of the splash zone as Jarvis pulled out his saber. Jarvis moved with insane speed—one slash per person. Against ordinary survivors stumbling around blind, it was like chopping veggies. In seconds, only one man was still alive, clutching his eyes and begging. Matthew clicked his tongue at him, then at the bodies everywhere, and sighed. "I told you not to mess with him. You wouldn't listen. Now look at you. Kinda pitiful, honestly..." He gave the dead a small bow. "Sorry, sorry..." Jarvis lifted his saber and asked the last survivor, "Is there a car with fuel nearby? Enough to reach the north side?" The trembling man answered instinctively, "The north side is the ancient city. Cars can't go in there." Then he suddenly realized something. "Wait—your accent..." The man who'd been trembling and pleading lowered his hand from his face and suddenly surged forward, grabbing for Jarvis' throat. "Damn it, you're a Bordurian! You—" Matthew jumped, thinking Jarvis might actually get caught. But in the next instant, Jarvis' blade flashed. A faint blur swept past, and the man dropped to the ground. He twitched twice, then went silent.
