Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Matthew sat rigid in his seat, teeth clenched, doing everything he could to fight down his fear. After a bit, he noticed they were already inside the city. But the truck still wasn't slowing down at all. He finally broke and begged again, "Jarvis! Please! Slow down!" But the more he pleaded, the faster the truck seemed to blast forward. Matthew's heart jumped straight into his throat. What was wrong with this crazy Bordurian? Every time he begged, Jarvis just slammed the gas harder! A sharp turn was coming up fast, and the truck's speed didn't drop one bit. He nearly lost it. "Hit the brakes! We're gonna flip if you turn like this!" That was when the usually tight-lipped Jarvis finally spoke. "The brakes failed. I can't slow it." Matthew's eyes almost burst out. "What?! Why didn't you tell me earlier?!" Jarvis pursed his lips together, gripping the wheel as he calmly replied, "I didn't want to scare you." Matthew just stared at him. "How would I not be—Ahhh!" Right on cue, the truck tipped over as it tried to take the turn. After rolling over, it slid a short distance and slammed into an apartment building with a deafening crash. In seconds, residents ran out. "Earthquake! Another earthquake!" "Run! It's shaking again!" They rushed out in chaos—only to realize it wasn't an earthquake at all. A giant truck had smashed straight into their building. A loudmouthed man clicked his tongue and complained to his wife. "See? I told you we shouldn't buy a place right on the street! It's the apocalypse, but we still can't sleep because of traffic!" His wife snapped back. "And you think I don't want a fancy place with a yard? We couldn't afford it because you're broke! Don't dump everything on me!" The man bristled. "What's money got to do with it? I wanted the unit in Myriad Residences—same price as this one! Not on a main road, and the community is gorgeous!" "Oh, you're bringing that up? That place is cursed! All five owners before died horribly! After we toured it, I got a fever for two days! You think I'm stupid enough to move into a cursed place with you?" The man stuck his neck out stubbornly. "Those were coincidences! You're just biased! So what if it's cursed? It's cheap and pretty! Look around—what place isn't cursed now? Every building had people die!" She rolled her eyes hard. "Now you're just talking nonsense." Before the man could respond, a neighbor yelled impatiently, "Can you two just shut up? Can't you see what's important? Right now—" Before he even finished, the man turned on him like he'd been insulted. "Why are you talking to my wife like that?!" The neighbor blinked, stunned. "I..." But that man didn't let him continue. "My wife was talking just fine! Who are you to tell her to shut up? She was already upset while arguing with me. Why are you barking at her?" The neighbor opened his mouth but couldn't even form a sentence. Is he crazy?Clearly, his wife wasn't any more normal. She pouted and hugged her husband's arm. "Don't mind him, honey. He's just a lonely bachelor. On a cold day like this, he doesn't even have someone to share a blanket with. How would he understand us?" The neighbor's jaw dropped. Oh, great. You two are in love and united, and I'm the clown now?! That man grabbed his wife's hand. "You're right. Let's go back in. I don't want you freezing. I'd feel awful." The neighbor stared as they walked back inside, all lovey-dovey. What were those two even talking about? Shivering, he stomped his feet and headed home as well. It was freezing. Everything inside was ice cold. Only the cramped wardrobe still trapped any warmth. If he wasn't scared of letting that little warm pocket escape, he would've dragged that ridiculous couple out for a proper fight. Although those three left, the rest of the neighbors stayed put, staring at the crashed truck. They lived on the lower floors, and the impact had shattered all the windows on the first and second floors. Even if they didn't all live there, it was the perfect moment to squeeze some grain out of someone. In weather like that, anyone still burning fuel to drive had to be loaded with supplies. They must've been hiding a stash. Seeing that there were only two seemingly weak people inside, the crowd stayed rooted in place. With so many of them together, they felt confident. Today, they planned to grab a windfall. After years of being pushed around by the Greendale Gang, a real chance had finally fallen in their laps. No way were they letting it go.
