Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
As the days went by, more and more people starved to death. In less than three months, people's habits and worldviews had changed dramatically. People started to accept death as a part of post-apocalypse life. Sometimes people would hear someone in another apartment wailing for a lost loved one, but they just walked by in numb silence. Even floating bodies in the water didn't shock anyone anymore. People just used their paddles—or even their bare hands—to push the corpses out of the way so the little boats wouldn't get stuck. After months of hunger and constant pressure, people became more and more indifferent. Almost everyone's life had been turned upside down. The only exception was Natalie. She spent her days at home, taking care of her health and growing plants. One day, she went into her storage space as usual, carefully tending to her test field of echinacea and watering it with water from the pond behind her villa. After she finished, she stepped out of the space with Lucky following behind, her belly full from drinking. She had barely set foot in her house again when she heard screaming coming from outside the window. "Crocodiles! There are crocodiles!!" "Help! Somebody help! Our boat's flipped over!" "Honey, hurry! Get up here!" Natalie stepped over to the window to check. Down below, the water was churning, and several groups out searching for supplies were thrown into chaos. Some people had fallen into the water, others were reaching out to help, some were desperately paddling their kayaks to get away, and a few had even been completely overturned ...The crocodiles floating in the water were the reason for all the panic. The water was stained red around a woman who was missing her left arm and leg. A few crocodiles were circling her, tearing her apart. Blood spread out in the water, turning it bright red. Even more crocodiles were attracted by the scent of blood and swam over. As people screamed, one of the crocodiles moved in on a man who had fallen in, lunged, and bit down on his right leg. The man cried out in agony and thrashed, struggling desperately to break free. But a crocodile never let go once it had its prey. Noticing the struggle, the crocodile spun its body, dragging the man in a death roll. Once wasn't enough—the crocodile rolled again and again until it tore off the man's right leg.It then munched on it happily. More and more crocodiles joined in—one bit the man's other leg, another his arm, another his head. All of them started spinning and rolling, fighting over the kill. In no time at all, the man was completely devoured. And he wasn't the only one. Others in the water all met the same fate. Even people on the boats who tried to help were dragged in, or their boats were capsized by crocodiles. The ones who reacted quickly managed to escape in their kayaks, but the slower ones were knocked over or had their kayaks bitten through, ending up in the water. The screams soon drew the attention of the residents in all the surrounding buildings. People shivered in fear at the horror they saw in the water. God, how are we supposed to survive like this?Just surviving the flood was already hard enough. Now with these monsters, who'd dare go out for food? Not long after, things quieted down, and all that was left was bloody, red water with crocodiles feasting on scattered limbs. Natalie closed the curtains and turned away. In her previous life, crocodiles had shown up at around this time and hurt a lot of people. Eventually, all sorts of other fish would show up, too. With all the flooding, rivers overflowed, and all the aquatic animals roamed freely, far more so than humans. Still, danger always came with opportunity. At first, people were terrified, but soon enough, they would start hunting the crocodiles. There were barely enough of these predators to go around.Humans didn't become the top of the food chain for nothing. It wouldn't be long before starving people hunted crocodiles nearly to extinction. Last time, Natalie had only survived because she'd managed to eat some crocodile meat at her lowest point. But this time, she had no intention of risking her life to fight over crocodiles with the rest. She had enough chicken, duck, beef, and mutton in her storage to eat well for the rest of her life. She didn't need meat that had been soaking in dirty water. That water was filled with garbage, sewage, and rotting corpses. She couldn't stomach eating meat that came out of that. She was happy to leave those survival resources to everyone else. They can have it all. Just like Natalie, Olivia had the same thought when she saw the crocodiles. She'd been staying home to recover, practicing needle therapy and shooting every day. She'd gotten a lot better at both, but the food Natalie had given her was running low. She needed to find a way to get more food. Just as she was about to head out that day, she witnessed the terrifying scene outside her window.
