Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Natalie raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" Selina's back was hunched. "I've thought it through. The Greendale Gang doesn't even allow survivors to trade goods privately, yet they let this couple run a shady inn here. Their relationship must be unusual! "Right now, the enemy is hidden while I'm exposed. They have numbers and power on their side. The gap in strength between us is too great. If I try to fight them now, it'll just be futile—a meaningless sacrifice." At this point, she sighed again. "Guinevere held me and cried for so long yesterday. I realized I can't be that selfish. "These past few years have been really hard on Guinevere. Her only belief was to hurry home. I can't abandon her just for revenge. I need to go home with her first. "Rastopia isn't far from here. In about two weeks, we should be able to get home. Once I've settled Guinevere and seen my family, I'll come back and lay low, biding my time before taking my revenge." Natalie raised an eyebrow. "Aren't you afraid I'll tell that couple what you just said?" Selina shook her head and declared firmly, "You won't." The room fell silent for a few seconds. Selina stood up and said goodbye to Natalie and the others. "I just came to warn you. I won't take up any more of your time. Once the snow stops, Guinevere and I will leave immediately. I wanted to say goodbye now. I wish you both all the best." Natalie watched as she bowed respectfully before turning to leave. Unable to hold back, she called out to her and pressed for answers. "Why do you think I won't?" Selina didn't catch on and turned around, looking at her in confusion. "Huh?"Natalie's brow furrowed. "I mean, why do you think I won't snitch on you?" Selina looked like it was obvious. "Because you're a good person." Hearing this answer, Natalie felt like laughing. Someone was calling her a good person? The number of lives on her hands was enough to populate a small town. She'd heard people call her a demon, but this was the first time she'd heard someone call her a good person. Selina seemed to read her thoughts and explained earnestly. "Your eyes are clear. I can tell you're not a bad person." Natalie opened her mouth but didn't know what to say. In the end, she spoke unusually softly and gently to comfort her. "Try not to grieve too hard for Anthony. I can tell you two had deep feelings for each other. Otherwise your hair wouldn't have turned white overnight. But..." Halfway through, Selina suddenly froze. "Turned white overnight?" Natalie nodded, then realized from Selina's reaction that she apparently didn't know yet. To make traveling easier in the apocalypse, Selina had always kept her hair in a short bob at ear length. Without looking in a mirror, she really couldn't see her own hair. Using her coat pocket as cover, Natalie pulled a small round mirror from her storage space and handed it to her. "Your hair's completely white. Your friend didn't tell you?" Selina shook her head blankly. "She was still sleeping in bed. I didn't wake her up." As she spoke, she reached out and took the small mirror from Natalie's hand. The person in the mirror was both familiar and strange. It was definitely her, but just as Natalie said, her hair had turned completely white. At first glance, she looked like an 80-year-old woman on death's door. Her face was still the same as before, but she was in terrible condition. Not only did she look haggard with dark circles under her eyes, but there were even several fine lines at the corners of her eyes. How was this possible? She was only in her early twenties. How could she have so many wrinkles around her eyes? Selina looked at the mirror and cried in disbelief. Yesterday when she saw Anthony's ring, she was devastated. In her entire life, she'd never been that sad and hurt. But she never imagined she'd be so heartbroken that she'd end up looking like this. As if overnight, her youth had been stolen from her. Seeing her intense reaction, Natalie reached out and patted her shoulder in comfort. Never mind her—even she and Cassian, two complete outsiders, had been quite shocked when they first saw her hair. Yesterday this girl still had black hair. Just one night later, when they met again, she already had a full head of white hair. She'd only seen this kind of thing in novels and TV shows before—the protagonist losing their beloved and their hair turning white overnight. She'd always thought it was an exaggeration, but today she actually witnessed it firsthand. After quite a while, Selina's emotions finally calmed down. She wiped away her tears and left. Natalie watched her go downstairs, then returned to the room and closed the door, sighing. "Poor thing!" Then she added, "I didn't expect her to suddenly snap out of it today after being completely bewitched yesterday. I thought she'd stay under the innkeeper's wife's spell." Cassian also found it strange. "Do cursebugs have an expiration date? Did it expire today?" Natalie thought about it. "Maybe the cursebug can handle heat but not cold? She went out and froze yesterday. Maybe she froze the bug inside her to death?"
