Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
They speculated back and forth until finally all they could do was sigh. A perfectly good girl had ended up like this. That couple running the shady inn was truly despicable. At first, Natalie thought the innkeeper's wife was pulling some new trick, sending Selina over to play nice as a spy or something. She hadn't expected this girl to do nothing of the sort, just come over pitifully to say goodbye and kindly give them a warning. Natalie glanced at the empty thermos by the door and clenched her fist. That wicked couple really deserved to be taught a lesson. At noon, the snow that had been falling endlessly finally stopped. Natalie opened the window to look out but got hit by the fierce wind and sneezed three times in a row. Cassian quickly came over and closed the window, looking at her with concern. "You okay?" Natalie shook her head. "I'm fine. Didn't expect the wind to still be this strong. Let's wait a bit longer. We'll leave once it dies down." Cassian frowned at her thin clothing. "Put on your coat." Natalie said dismissively, "No need. I'm wearing my climate suit! Besides, we have the heater in here." Cassian insisted, "It's still cold. You sneezed." Natalie replied, "That was from the wind." The two stared at each other for a few seconds. Natalie looked away and found a coat to put on. Cassian reopened the window and took the thermometer to measure the outdoor temperature. "-61°F." Natalie recalled, "Much better than my past life. When the snow stopped in my past life, it was already -85°F." As she spoke, she leaned out the window to look. "The snow accumulation is also less than in my past life. Looking at the depth, it only reaches the knees. It doesn't even get to the thighs. In my past life, the snow was almost chest-deep. You had to clear snow everywhere you went. It trapped quite a few people to death." But Natalie didn't believe the apocalypse would suddenly become gentle. She pressed her lips together. "This snow is probably going to start up again." Cassian nodded and asked for her opinion. "So are we leaving today? Or just wait until the snow completely finishes?" Natalie thought about it. "Leave! As soon as the wind dies down, we leave immediately." This place was extremely sketchy, and the innkeeper couple had ill intentions. They shouldn't stick around much longer. Better to hit the road early and find a new place to stay before the next blizzard hits. Cassian thought the same. "The sooner we leave, the better." Several hours later, around 2 p.m., the raging wind finally stopped. Natalie looked at the quiet white world outside the window. "Let's go. Time to leave." They'd been out for several days now, and she missed home. She needed to hurry up and finish collecting supplies from the southern warehouse so she could go home and relax. In this freezing weather, getting together with Olivia and the others to enjoy a fondue meal would be wonderful. The two quickly packed up all their supplies. As usual, each carried a backpack, with everything else stored in the storage space. Cassian was in charge of dressing the three little ones in their climate suits and thick clothes, while Natalie went downstairs first. As soon as she reached the first floor, she ran into the innkeeper, whose face was flushed red from the cold. "Oh, missy! Coming down so early today? My wife and I have been shoveling snow. We haven't started making dinner yet." He put down his snow shovel while complaining, "The snow accumulated way too much, and the weather is just too cold. We've been working until now just to clear the area in front of the door." Natalie waved her hand to interrupt him. "I'm not here for dinner." Only then did the innkeeper notice the backpack behind her. "You're ... checking out?" Natalie confirmed it. His smile instantly froze. He quickly turned his head and shouted toward the bathroom. "Honey! This lady is checking out!" Soon, the innkeeper's wife, bundled up in thick clothes, came rushing out. "Checking out already?" Natalie was about to mock her when she saw her face and froze. This woman looked even more stunning after just one day. While the cold had turned both their faces red, the innkeeper's face looked like a baboon's rear end, but the innkeeper's wife looked like she was wearing blush, making her even more radiant and captivating. Probably for the convenience of working, she had her hair pulled up high with just a few stray strands falling from her temples, giving her a capable yet alluring look. It was as if she'd consumed some premium supplement overnight. The innkeeper's wife not only had a rosy complexion and bright eyes, but her entire being radiated a youthful, vibrant, healthy beauty. Natalie couldn't help but stare in a daze. Though she knew the woman was bad news, her beauty was truly the mesmerizing kind that made it impossible to look away. However, the innkeeper's wife was in no mood to appreciate the amazement in Natalie's eyes. Her expression stiff, she tried to persuade her. "Missy, the wind just stopped. Why the rush to leave? What if you're halfway there and the blizzard suddenly starts up again? How dangerous!" Natalie snapped out of it and, seeing the calculating look in her eyes, said coldly, "We have things to do. Not staying." The woman bit her lip helplessly. This damn snow—couldn't it have kept falling for one more day? Why did it have to stop so soon? She hadn't even had time to put the beauty cursebug on this girl yet.
