Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 491 Breaking In

"Ms. Eland!" Lisa gave a quick nod and pulled out the wire she usually used to scale walls. Philbert quickly blocked her. "Let me handle this. Your arm's still not healed." Lisa didn't argue and allowed Philbert to climb over first. He opened the gate from inside. The whole squad rushed into the yard, each with a glass breaker in hand. They smashed their way forward, swift and aggressive. Upstairs, Whitney and Bruno had just been about to turn in when the racket exploded. Whitney was on the third floor and caught the noise from below. She ran out of her room and nearly crashed into Bruno, who was rushing up from the second floor. Bruno seized her hand. "Go back in your room! Don't step out!" He didn't wait for her to object, dragging her back and pushing her inside. Whitney stumbled, ready to protest, but Bruno silenced her. His expression was deadly serious. "Lock it. No matter what you hear, don't unlock it." He slammed the door shut and bolted away. Whitney longed to follow, but she knew she'd only drag him down. If she went out, she'd distract him and make it worse. So she bit down hard, secured the lock, and whispered frantic prayers. She begged for Bruno to pull through. It was probably just a few burglars breaking in. Bruno was an elite guard, trained and tough. He'd manage! She pressed close to the door, nerves frayed, listening as battle sounds erupted below. The clash was sharp but ended in seconds before silence fell. Whitney let out a long breath. It must've been only a handful of them. Bruno likely finished it quickly. She waited, but Bruno never returned. Whitney couldn't stop herself from calling, "Bruno? Bruno! Answer me!" No reply. Her chest tightened. "Bruno, are you hurt?" She called over and over, but still silence. At last, she gripped the knob, about to twist it open. Bruno had to be in danger. He would never ignore her otherwise. Then, Bruno's voice came from the hall. "Whitney, keep it shut!" Her heart soared. "Bruno! Thank God you're fine! What's happening out there?" But instead, a female voice rang out, "Ms. Jensen, I'm back! Won't you come out to greet an old friend?" That voice ... "Lisa?" Whitney's face sank. The intruder who shattered her window was the woman who once crashed at her place? Outside, Lisa chuckled. "Heh, seems Ms. Jensen hasn't forgotten me! You caught it just from my voice." Whitney's worry for Bruno made her reach for the knob, but Bruno's voice came again. "Whitney, don't open it!" Right after, blows and kicks followed, and Bruno groaned in pain.Whitney's panic spiked. "Bruno! What's going on? Are you alright? Lisa, what are you after?!" Lisa ignored her and mocked Bruno instead. "Still the same nuisance. Always standing in my way!" Whitney trembled inside. Bruno was an expert, the best there was. Even if outnumbered, he wouldn't fold so quickly! Unless ... they were armed, like Cassian had been? The thought struck hard. Without hesitation, Whitney swung the door wide. She couldn't let him die shielding her. Lisa's eyes widened when the door burst open. "Ms. Jensen, you've got guts!" She'd been debating whether to break the door or use Bruno as bait for a cruel game. Even if Joe fancied Whitney, Lisa never trusted in real kindness. She wanted to test if Ms. Jensen would save herself or gamble everything for Bruno when his life dangled. But Whitney didn't allow her that choice. Lisa scowled and barked to her crew, "Take them both!" "Yes, Ms. Eland!" Whitney didn't spare the men who seized her. She rushed straight for Bruno, pinned to the ground. "Bruno! Are you okay?!" Bruno looked terrible with his face battered, bleeding, eyes swollen shut, and dazed. Yet hearing Whitney, he forced himself to lift his head. "Whitney ... I told you ... to keep the door locked." Whitney's eyes blurred with tears. "Forget me! How bad is it? Your head's bleeding! Did they hit it?!"Lisa's team had guns. When Bruno came down, he'd already dropped two attackers before a cold barrel pressed against his temple. He tried to snatch it, but more guns appeared from every side, closing him in.
