Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
He was panting hard, dragging himself toward the house as fast as he could. Inside, Derek looked at the half-empty closet of supplies and let out a tired sigh. "Not much left," he said. Lillian tried to comfort him gently. "It's not as good as before, but we're still way better off than most survivors down the hill. As long as the three of us stick together, we can handle this." Derek nodded. "You're right!" He started organizing the supplies carefully, really putting in effort. Rosalie watched nearby, quietly listening as Lillian tried to encourage this clueless man. Actually, Rosalie wasn't unfamiliar with Derek. Growing up, she had seen him more than Jacob. Because she and Lillian had to keep a low profile, Jacob couldn't always show up. So Derek often handled things for them. Looking back, it made sense why Lillian had so many chances to get close to Derek. Rosalie pressed her lips together. She didn't know how Lillian had tricked Derek into thinking she was his daughter, but she knew Lillian was taking a big risk. What could she do now? Derek wasn't her biological father, and her biological father, Jacob, couldn't take care of her and her mother. Rosalie couldn't help but think about how great it would be if she were as strong as Natalie. Then she wouldn't feel so helpless like this. Just as she was lost in thought, Jacob crawled in, gasping and out of breath. His eyes were full of anger and despair. Even at his best, he couldn't match the strong Derek, and now, with his leg badly hurt and unable to stand, he was helpless. With no other choice, he had to swallow his pride and play the sympathy card."Derek, I've treated you well all these years. I won't hold a grudge about you being with my woman. I just hope you'll leave my supplies alone, for old times' sake." Hearing his plea, Derek didn't even stop what he was doing. "Yeah, you've been good to me. But you haven't been good to Lillian." Jacob blinked, confused. How I treated my woman—what did that have to do with Derek? Derek looked at Lillian with a deep, intense gaze. "Lillian has suffered a lot because of you. She told me everything. She's not happy! And that's all your fault!" Jacob had nothing to say. "Derek, listen ... " Derek cut him off. "Mr. Ashford, I do appreciate what you've done for me. But in the end, everyone looks out for themselves first." He stared at Jacob and said slowly, word by word, "Ms. Keller treated you well too back then, didn't she?" The moment Scarlett's name was mentioned, Jacob lost all his moral high ground. He stammered, unable to answer. After a moment, he got angry and embarrassed at the same time. "Whatever happened between me and Scarlett is none of your business!" Derek snorted. "You have no conscience, so how can you expect anyone else to?" Jacob was furious. He shouted and lunged at Derek, but Derek kicked him aside effortlessly. Jacob hit the ground, groaning helplessly. Rosalie couldn't stand watching him struggle and tried to help him stand, but Lillian grabbed her arm. "Don't just stand there! Help your real dad pack the supplies!" She put extra emphasis on "your real dad." Rosalie looked at Lillian for a moment, then reluctantly obeyed, joining Derek to pack the supplies. Before long, the three of them had packed everything into the large duffel bags Derek had brought. Lillian and Rosalie each carried two lighter bags, while Derek carried three heavy ones. They got ready to leave. Lillian walked ahead and opened the villa door. Derek shone his flashlight outside, only to see that in just a short time, the whole area was now wrapped in thick fog. Lillian frowned. "Where did this fog come from?" Derek asked, "Should we still go? We can hardly see the road." Lillian thought for a moment. "We have to go." She felt nervous and just wanted to get out of there as fast as possible. Maisie still hadn't returned. Who knew if Natalie might appear angry and suddenly storm in to shoot them all? Fog wasn't worse than bullets. Derek and Rosalie followed her without arguing. They immediately decided to keep moving. Jacob was still on the ground, panicking. He suddenly lunged forward and grabbed Lillian's leg tightly. "Leave the supplies!" he shouted. Lillian cried out in pain. Seeing this, Derek kicked him hard, sending him flying ten feet. The fog rushed in through the open door, swirling all around them. Derek sniffed the air, put down his bags, his eyes red with anger, and walked straight toward Jacob. He raised his fists and started hitting Jacob over and over, punching until Jacob was battered and bleeding on the floor. Rosalie screamed in fear and ran forward to stop him. "Derek! Stop!" Derek threw a few more punches, then finally stopped. By that time, Jacob was completely unconscious. The fog grew thicker around them. Derek stood there, breathing hard, looking at the blood on his hands.
