Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Lucky replied, "Ow ow, ow ow ow ow!" Natalie was speechless. She didn't understand a single thing. She looked to Cassian for help. "Can you understand what Lucky's saying?" Cassian looked a little resigned. "I don't get it either." Natalie sighed. "Lucky obviously knows something. If only we could understand her." Lucky glanced away, looking even more guilty. "See!" Natalie pointed at Lucky. "Look at her!" Cassian watched Lucky's sheepish expression and almost laughed. "It's fine. We might not understand what she says, but she understands us." He crouched down and patiently patted her head. "Lucky, let's play a guessing game. If I'm right about what happened, nod your head." Lucky nodded. "Did Cash came back?" Lucky nodded. "Did he come inside the house?" Lucky snuck a glance at Natalie, then shook her head. Natalie saw her droopy face and had to hold back a laugh. "You didn't open the door for him, did you?" Everyone in the family knew Lucky could open doors—she did it all the time, sneaking around and jumping out to scare Cash. This time, Lucky hesitated for a second, then finally nodded. What's going on? I hid it pretty well. How did she figure out I left Cash outside? Thinking about it, Lucky nervously shifted her eyes. Was I that obvious? Worried Natalie might be angry, Lucky ran over to her empty food bowl and started pretending to eat. Cassian caught on and stood up to explain. "Lucky means she was busy eating at the time, so she didn't have time to open the door for Cash." Lucky turned around and nodded as fast as she could. Natalie looked at her and couldn't help but smile. Her whole face seemed to say, "I'm the smartest, I know how to make excuses." This dog just couldn't lie. She didn't bother holding it against her. The most important thing was to find that half-roasted chicken. He was part of the family, after all. Besides, he'd done his fair share of pest control for the household. There was no way she'd let him become someone else's dinner. So she asked Lucky again, "Do you know where Cash went?" Lucky shook her head without hesitation. She really didn't know. Natalie frowned and summed it up. "Cash came back, but he didn't come in. Then he left again. And by the look of things, Lucky really has no idea where he went." Cassian said, "Let's go look for him. Bring Lucky—she's got a sharp nose." Baron wanted to tag along, but Natalie quickly turned him down. "You stay here and watch the house!"Soon, the two of them and Lucky set out. Harold and the others saw them leaving and called out from the next yard, "Did you find him?" Natalie shook her head. "He probably ran far off. We're taking Lucky to look further away." Olivia hurried over. "Let me help you look." Harold said, "I'll go, too. More people means better chances of finding him." Natalie waved them off. "No need. Lucky's nose is sharp. The two of us and her will be fine. You guys stay here in case anything happens." With Natalie insisting, no one else followed. Lucky sniffed around and soon led Natalie and Cassian to a villa, where she stopped. Natalie shone her flashlight into the yard, but saw nothing. "Lucky, is it here?" Lucky sniffed the ground again, then nodded. She'd recognize that smell of burnt feathers anywhere—this was definitely it. Natalie looked over at the windows. All the other rooms were dark, except for a flicker of candlelight in the living room on the first floor. The owners were probably downstairs. Cassian stepped up to check the gate. It was locked tight. They called out softly through the gate, "Cash, are you in there?" "Cash, come out." But there was no response. Natalie looked to Lucky again. "You're sure it's here?"Seeing Lucky so confident, Natalie suddenly had a bad feeling. "What if he's already been caught and they're about to cook him?" She asked Cassian, "Do you know who lives here?" Cassian thought carefully. "I don't know." He hardly ever paid attention to the neighbors in the Hillside Villa District. Natalie couldn't remember either. There were too many residents, and she'd been gone for six years. She just couldn't recall. So she got ready to use Blink to get into the yard and check. Cassian looked worried. "We don't know what's in there. I'll go with you." Natalie thought for a second, then nodded. The time spent inside the storage space when using Blink was incredibly brief—less than a third of a second. It was so short that it was impossible to even notice the existence of the storage space. Going in and coming out happened in a flash. Natalie grabbed Lucky with one hand and Cassian with the other, just about to Blink, when she heard a "coo coo coo". Coo coo coo? She looked closely. Out in the darkness, two big, shiny eyes were running straight toward her.
